Los Angeles Dodgers in Talks With Boston Red Sox for Mookie Betts
USA Today writer Bob Nightengale reports that the Los Angeles Dodgers are engaged in trade discussions with the Boston Red Sox for superstar outfielder Mookie Betts. As of 4:50 pm PST, it is reported that these trade talks are only exploratory from unnamed sources that are “directly” involved.
What key pieces could the Dodgers be willing to give up for this star outfielder?
Last season Betts batted .295 with 80 RBIs and 97 walks. Overall he’s a 301 hitter that can provide some serious offense and defense to this already dangerous Dodgers lineup. Out of the two teams involved in this deal, it is reported by USA Today that the Red Sox are much more inclined to trade Betts than the Cleveland Indians would be trading Francisco Lindor (whom it has been reported in Los Angeles’s number one target).
The way everything sits right now it depends on the Cleveland Indians whether the Dodgers will end up fully engaging with the Boston Red Sox about Mookie. The way Bob Nightengale writes it, if Cleveland and the Dodgers can not come together on a trade price for Lindor that suits both parties, then Los Angeles turns all of its attention toward acquiring Mookie Betts from the Boston Red Sox.
Boston sits in a precarious position in regards to their payroll situation. Last season the team had to pay 13 million dollars in a luxury tax on top of already having the highest payroll in all of baseball. Betts sits at the final year of his contract and is slated to make somewhere between 27-30 million dollars, hitting free agency after this season. Trading Mookie would take the Boston Red Sox under the 208 million dollar threshold in 2020, which would avoid paying the luxury tax.
On the other hand, the Los Angeles Dodgers are clearly a team that would be able to absorb this massive contract and possibly have a chance to re-sign him after the season to a longer deal. The Dodgers are a fairly young team and Betts’ with postseason experience could help push the Dodgers over that playoff hump they seem to hit every year without fail.
Dodgers Fans, Who Would You Rather Have? Mookie Betts or Francisco Lindor.
