New York Yankees: Gerrit Cole Breaks the Bank With 9 Year Deal
Gerrit Cole spent the past couple of seasons with the Houston Astros after being traded from the Pittsburgh Pirates. After Cole did not pitch in Game 7 of the World Series, it appeared as if Gerrit Cole was already out the door from Houston. They lost to the Washington Nationals in seven games. Cole will no longer be pitching with the Astros because he signed a 9-year deal with the New York Yankees worth $324 million, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Pasan.
Cole is one of the best pitchers in baseball. He will be the number one pitcher for the New York Yankees. Luis Severino and James Paxton will be the second and third pitchers in the rotation. It will be interesting to see who will be the fourth and fifth starters next season.
Gerrit Cole is only 29 years old. The New York Yankees hope to win a World Series Title or two with him at the helm. New York has not won a World Series Title since the 2009 season against the Philadelphia Phillies in six games. The Yankees also have not been to the World Series since then.
Cole’s record last season was 20-5 with a 2.50 ERA. In 212.1 innings pitched last season, he gave up 142 hits and 66 runs. Gerrit Cole also walked 48 batters and struck out a career-high 326 batters. Last year might have been the best season of his MLB career.
There were some other teams that had a vested interest in him. The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels were also in pursuit of Cole, but they lost that battle.
If Gerrit Cole decides to opt of his contract after his fifth season, it will be interesting to see if a team like the New York Mets would go after him. One of the reasons why this is the case is because many expect Steve Cohen to own the team by then.
It isn’t a surprise that the New York Mets didn’t go after him now because the Wilpon’s still currently own the team. They have a reputation of being cheap and not spending any money.
The New York Yankees fan base can’t complain anymore about not getting a starting pitcher because General Manager Brain Cashman finally spent some money on one.
Stephen Strasburg already signed a seven-year deal worth $245 million with the Washington Nationals earlier in the week.
Madison Bumgarner is still available on the open market and someone is going to go after him, but I doubt someone is going to pay him the money that Cole and Strasburg received. Bumgarner is 30 years old. Thus, it will be interesting to see what kind of contract he will receive in the upcoming days.
With the offense the New York Yankees have, New York, should have no more excuses when it comes to pitching. We will see what happens with Gerrit Cole moving forward, but Yankees fans and the organization should be thrilled this morning because they finally have a number one ace.
