New York Giants: What Should They Do With the Number Two Pick?

The New York Giants are going to be drafting in the Top 5 most likely in the NFL Draft for the second time in three seasons. New York got the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and they took running back Saquon Barkley from Penn State.

Last season, with the sixth overall pick, they took quarterback Daniel Jones from Duke University. Jones and Barkley look like they are the only franchise players on this team.

This team lacks football players and coaching. Head Coach Pat Shurmur and General Manager Dave Gettleman should be shown the door this offseason.

The entire scouting department should be fired at the end of the season and bring in new scouts as well. This team needs football players and the Giants barely have any on the roster.

I remember one time when San Francisco 49ers General Manager John Lynch was interviewed somewhere. I tried to find the video of him being interviewed on YouTube but I couldn’t find it. This stood out to me because he mentioned in a statement claiming that this team needs football players.

I feel the same way about New York football right now. This team needs football players. There scouting evaluation and player development is awful. They need coaches, a front office, and a scouting department that will stress player development, finding football players, and develop a winning culture.

As of right now, what would the New York Giants (2-10) do with the number two pick? They currently would have somewhere between 8-12 picks in this draft.

New York could potentially trade back and acquire more draft capital. The most realistic option would be drafting defensive end Chase Young from Ohio State University with the number two pick in the NFL Draft.

Young could be a player that changes this defense overnight.

The New York Giants drafted Lawrence Taylor with the second overall pick a long time. Taylor is probably the best defensive player who ever lived.

In saying that, this team needs an identity. New York has won Super Bowls with having a nasty defense and Young would be the start of it.

In 10 games played so far this season, he has recorded 38 tackles, 16.5 sacks, has forced seven fumbles, and has one pass deflection.

Giants fans will be in utter disgust if they don’t take him with the number two pick. Here is a major question though. What if the Cincinnati Bengals (1-11), who currently own the number one pick take Chase Young over quarterback Joe Burrow from LSU?

The answer should be that the New York Giants need to unequivocally trade down and acquire more picks. This team needs as many football players as they can get.

Another option with the number two pick could be Andrew Thomas from the University of Georgia. He would be a perfect left tackle for Daniel Jones. This offensive line still needs some help. Nate Solder is not the answer at left tackle and New York will most likely release him at the end of the season.

Tristan Wirfs from the University of Iowa could be another selection here. He is another offensive tackle and Wirfs could be as good as Thomas.

A.J. Epenesa from the University of Iowa could be another selection here. He is a defensive end. Epenesa isn’t the talent that Young is, but A.J. Epenesa is still a very good player. He has recorded 45 tackles, recorded nine sacks, forced three fumbles, and has had three pass deflections so far this season.

This would be a shocking pick here but cornerback Jeffrey Okudah from the Ohio State University could be another option here. Janoris Jenkins will probably walk out the door after the season and the first-round pick Deandre Baker has not been very good this season.

They traded up for Baker last season back into the first-round. He has been alright and Deandre Baker played at the University of Georgia.

Ohio State has had a history of having terrific corners lately. Marshon Lattimore and Denzel Ward were first-round picks. Eli Apple was the only one that did not pan out until he went to the New Orleans Saints and Apple is now teammates with Lattimore.

Ward is with the Cleveland Browns.

Okudah has recorded 26 tackles, two forced fumbles, and three interceptions. He is fantastic in coverage.

The other player that could be taken with the number two pick is wide receiver Jerry Jeudy from the University of Alabama.

Alabama is a wide receiver factor lately and the Tide has many candidates at the wide receiver position. Jeudy would be the number one option for Daniel Jones. He can create separation and Jerry Jeudy has a ton of speed on the outside.

Jeudy has caught 71 receptions for 959 yards receiving and nine touchdowns so far this season. It will be interesting to see in the NFL whether or not these wide receivers are good and also made Tua Tagovaila good or if Tagovaila made these guys good.

The main positions this team needs are on the offensive line, at wide receiver, anything and everything on the defense side of the ball including pass rushers on the defensive line and athletic linebackers.

This is going to be another long offseason for the New York Giants. They need to sign key free agents and New York will most likely have over $100 million in cap space in the offseason.

This team also never picked first overall in franchise history and that might change this season. If the Giants lose out and if the Cincinnati Bengals win at least one more game, then New York would own the number one pick in the NFL Draft for the first time in franchise history.

The fans have been wanting draft positioning more than winning as of late which is sad. This is a franchise with deep tradition for winning football games and Super Bowls.
