Are the New York Rangers Quiet NHL Contenders?

The New York Rangers were not picked to make it to the playoffs this season by most people. They have not made it to the playoffs since the 2016-2017 season. New York is in its second season in a rebuild under Head Coach David Quinn.

The Rangers shutout the New Jersey Devils on the road on Saturday afternoon by a score of 4-0. New York lost a hard-fought battle on the road against the Boston Bruins on Friday afternoon by a score of 3-2 in overtime.

At the moment, the New York Rangers currently sit in sixth place in the Metropolitan Division with a 13-9-3 record with 29 points so far this season. New York is only two points back of the Carolina Hurricanes for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Carolina is playing on the road on Saturday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Rangers are five points back of the New York Islanders for the third spot in the Metropolitan Division. If the Islanders beat the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night, the Rangers will then be six points back of the Philadelphia Flyers for the third spot in the Metropolitan Division then.

New York is currently three points back of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the first wild card spot. Pittsburgh is on the road on Saturday night against the St. Louis Blues.

The New York Rangers are currently 12 points back of the Washington Capitals for the first spot in the Metropolitan Division.

One of the reasons why New York is relevant so far this season is because of the offseason signing of Artemi Panarin. He has scored 12 goals and has recorded 21 assists so far this season. Panarin’s plus/minus is 12.

Ryan Strome has scored six goals and has recorded 17 assists so far this season. His plus/minus is 8.

Tony DeAngelo has scored seven goals and has recorded 12 assists so far this season. His plus/minus is 1.

Pavel Buchnevich has scored five goals and has recorded 14 assists so far this season. His plus/minus is 6.

Mike Zibanejad has only appeared in 12 games so far this season. He has scored six goals and has recorded eight assists. His plus/minus is -2.

Rookies Adam Fox and Kaapo Kakko have been filling in nicely so far this season. Fox has scored five goals and has recorded nine assists so far this season on the back end. His plus/minus is 5.

Kakko was the second overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. He has scored six goals and recorded five assists so far this season. His plus/minus is -13. Kaapo Kakko’s defensive game needs some work.

Chris Kreider has scored six goals and has recorded seven assists so far this season. His plus/minus rating is even.

Jacob Trouba has scored three goals and has recorded 10 assists so far this season. His plus/minus is 1. He was traded from the Winnipeg Jets in the offseason for defenseman Neals Pionk and a draft pick.

Filip Chytil has scored eight goals and has recorded two assists so far this season. He has played in 16 games and Chytil needed a short stint in the AHL with the Hartford Wolf Pack to get his game back. Filip Chytil’s plus/minus rating so far this season is 7.

Brady Skjei has appeared in 24 games so far this season. He has scored four goals and has recorded six assists. His plus/minus rating is even.

Alexander Georgiev has been a little better than Henrik Lundqvist so far this season. Georgiev has appeared in 11 games and he has started in 10 games. Alexander Georgiev’s record so far this season is 6-4-1 with a .912 save percentage and a 3.08 GAA, along with one shutout.

Henrik Lundqvist has appeared in 16 games so far this season and he has started in 15 games. Lundqvist’s record so far this season is 7-5-2 with a .912 save percentage and a 3.16 GAA.

Henrik Lundqvist is 37 years old. He will be a free agent after the 2021 season.

Igor Shestyorkin might be the goalie of the future. He is 23 years old. Shestyorkin is currently playing in the AHL with the Hartford Wolf Pack.

In 12 games so far this season, his record is 7-3-4 with a .927 save percentage and a 2.06 GAA, along with one shutout.

This team has the speed and personnel to maybe make it to the playoffs this season. I am not sure if they are going to because of how good the Eastern Conference is.

If the New York Rangers don’t make it to the playoffs this season, they will have a very good chance next season to make it.

New York would be a tough out and they will be in the future. The Rangers have not won the Stanley Cup Title since 1994 against the Vancouver Canucks. They won that series in seven games.

New York last went to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2014. They lost to the Los Angeles Kings in five games that year. The New York Rangers’ next game will be on Monday night at home against the Vegas Golden Knights.
