St. Louis Cardinals: What Happened to the NL Central Champs?
The St. Louis Cardinals won the National League Central title on the final day of the MLB regular season. They were the number three seed in the National League.
St. Louis upset the Atlanta Braves in five games in the NLDS. The Cardinals scored 10 runs in game 5 on the road and St. Louis never looked back.
After that, it appeared as if the St. Louis Cardinals ran into a buzz saw in the Washington Nationals. In fact, Washington swept them in the NLCS in four games.
I thought St. Louis was going to win this series in seven games, but the Nationals had other ideas. The Cardinals have pieces in place moving forward.
This is the first time since the 2015 season that St. Louis reached the postseason. Nevertheless, the St. Louis Cardinals will take this series sweep and use it as motivation heading into next season.
This team was very inconsistent at times throughout the regular season and people made it further than they thought they would. One of the things going in their favor this past season was the St. Louis Blues winning the Stanley Cup and it created that vibe when the St. Louis Cardinals reached the postseason.
St. Louis fell short of their ultimate goal and they have not won it all since the 2011 season against the Texas Rangers in seven games. The Cardinals made it to the World Series in 2013, but they lost to the Boston Red Sox in six games.
St. Louis is a well-run organization and they will be in very good shape moving forward. Paul Goldschmidt was very good in his first season with the ball club after he was acquired in a trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks this past offseason.
Dexter Fowler, Paul DeJong, Kolten Wong, Marcell Ozuna, and Yadier Molina will be some of the key players moving forward. Dakota Hudson, Jack Flaherty, and Mike Mikolas is not a very bad rotation moving forward. However, they might look to add another starter from within or free agency/trade.
The bullpen could use some work, but the St. Louis Cardinals had one of the best ERAs in the second half of the regular season. St. Louis will be one of the favorites to win the National League Central once again in 2020. Although, the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs will also be very good again next season.
The Cincinnati Reds could be a team that surprises people in 2020. Cincinnati is a team that has majorly improved and they are ready to take that next step in their rebuilding process.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will not be a threat to anyone in the National League Central in 2020. Pittsburgh has a long way to go in being competitive again and the Pirates need to start a full rebuild.
The Cardinals will have some things to fix in the offseason. In fact, Manager Mike Shildt did a very good job of managing this team this season. Shildt, indeed, knows how to get his players to perform on a night-to-night basis. Thus It could be a very interesting offseason for this team and they know the future is bright in St. Louis.
