NCAA Football: A Look Inside the Clemson Tigers vs the Florida State Seminoles

Both of these ACC college football teams are coming off a bye week and headed straight into a rivalry week on Saturday, October 12th, 2019. The Clemson Tigers survived a road game at North Carolina 21-20 on September 28th. Also, the Florida State Seminoles dominated NC State 31-13 on that same day. The Clemson Tigers look to try and improve this week against Florida State after some offensive problems through the first five games. The Seminoles look to try and continue the impressive last two wins they have had by possibly upsetting the Tigers.

Going into this game the Clemson Tigers are 5-0 on the season and the Florida State Seminoles have a 3-2 record. The overall series record is led by the Seminoles 20-12, but the Clemson Tigers have won the last four meetings and have the rivalry momentum coming into this game. This should be another ACC football rivalry classic and will be worth watching this weekend. Let’s take a closer look at both ACC football teams, the Clemson Tigers and the Florida State Seminoles.

Clemson Tigers

The number one team of the ACC the Clemson Tigers come in favored highly and look to play at their full potential this Saturday. The point spread has Clemson favored by 27 points in this game versus ACC rival Florida State and ESPN gives the Tigers a 93.8 percent chance to win in Death Valley. Much of this is due to the explosive weapons on offense and the suffocating defense by the Clemson Tigers.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Tigers are led in the passing game by Sophomore Quarterback Trevor Lawrence who has racked up 1131 yards and 8 touchdowns. Although, with those positives come the negatives for Lawrence. Trevor has five interceptions this season compared to just four all of last season. Arguably the best quarterback in the ACC, Trevor Lawrence must stop the miscues to help lead the Clemson Tigers offense to victory.

The wide receivers for the Tigers will try to help as best as they can. In fact, they will most likely catch everything that comes their way. Clemson receiver Tee Higgins has 505 yards along with three touchdowns on the season and will look to be the number one target against Florida State. Other receivers to watch on the Tigers offense will be Justyn Ross who has 218 yards, a touchdown as well, and Amari Rodgers who has pulled in 139 yards plus two touchdowns. Those three receivers are going to be focused on by the Seminoles defense on Saturday.

In the rushing game, early on this season running back Travis Etienne looked to be the commanding rusher and still is, but it’s also like a committee of a rushing attack. Travis leads the way with five touchdowns along with his 462 yards. Running back Lyn-J Dixon has 240 yards and three touchdowns for the Clemson Tigers. Even Quarterback Trevor Lawrence has 100 yards and four touchdowns in the rushing game. Everybody is a threat running the ball for Clemson. Another aspect of the offense Florida State has to stop to win against the Clemson Tigers. Both the rushing and passing games are why the Tigers are averaging 38 points a game.

Even better than the offense is this Clemson Tigers defense in 2019. The defense is only allowing 12 points a game versus other teams offenses and is suffocating opponents. The defense is led by Safety/Linebacker Isaiah Simmons as he has 43 total tackles and three being sacks. Other defensive leaders for Clemson include Chad Smith Linebacker, James Skalski Linebacker, K’Von Wallace Defensive back/Safety, Tanner Muse Safety, and Jordan Williams Defensive Lineman. The Clemson Tigers need all the defensive leaders to do well and more to help beat the Florida State Seminoles.

Florida State Seminoles

Rising back up in the ACC conference after a bad 2018 college football season and a horrible start to 2019, Florida State has some momentum coming into this game at Clemson. Following a 1-2 start this year the Seminoles have won two straight games to improve their record to 3-2 overall. Much of the reasons behind those wins can be given to both sides of the ball on offense and defense for the Florida State Seminoles.

In the passing game, both Quarterbacks James Blackman and Alex Hornibrook have played well for the Seminoles. Blackman has had 970 yards this season for FSU, nine touchdowns, and only two interceptions. Hornibrook for the Seminoles has had 571 yards and five touchdowns with zero interceptions. They both deserve credit to any success so far in the passing game for Florida State. The receivers that Clemson will need to stop are Keyshawn Helton and Tamorrion Terry.

The Seminoles wide receivers are a key to the passing game. Terry has had 384 yards with four touchdowns and Helton has 232 yards with three scores. The Tigers defense needs to hone in on those two FSU wide receivers for sure.

In the rushing game for the Florida State Seminoles, it is a one-man show. Junior Running back Cam Akers stands alone with 582 yards rushing and seven touchdowns for the Seminoles. He was one of the most positive things I had to say about Florida State. He is the guy I would let carry this team in 2019. In fact, on Saturday it would be smart to make sure Cam Akers has his carries against Clemson. He could explode offensively for the Seminoles.

The FSU defense will need to do some solid work as well to help win this game for the program. Leading the Seminoles defensive against Clemson will be players like Hamsah Nasirildeen Defensive back, Dontavious Jackson Linebacker, Cyrus Fagan Defensive back, and Marvin Wilson Defensive Tackle. They will need to try and stop this explosive Tigers offense like they stopped NC State before the bye week in order to win in Death Valley. Also, Florida State held the Wolfpack to just 13 points and will need that same energy to beat Clemson.

The game on Saturday, October the 12th will be an interesting ACC football clash between storied programs. Both the Clemson Tigers and Florida State Seminoles are in different places as teams but forget all that. They play tough no matter what happens throughout the year and always have classic games worth watching. The game this weekend will be on channel ABC at 3:30 PM Eastern Time and will be worth tuning into. Another ACC football classic game between the Clemson Tigers and the Florida State Seminoles will be upon us. You won’t want to miss the action between these two rivals on Saturday.
