Florida Gators: Good, Bad, and Ugly vs Auburn Tigers
The matchup between the Florida Gators and Auburn Tigers was a must watch over the weekend. Both teams were in the top 10. The Gators and Tigers both have good defenses. This game was not high scoring with the final being 24-14. The Gators on homecoming would come out on top. There were many mistakes by both teams. As stated by ESPN College Gameday the team that made fewer mistakes would win. In the end that was the Gators. These two teams are the top teams on their respected side of the SEC. Now even though the Tigers took the loss they will still be a team to beat. On the other hand, the Gators by winning now moves to 6-0 and they still have three big games left to get through the tough part of their schedule. This was a good game with ugly parts in it.
Good: Florida Defense
The defense has been great all season. The defense held the Tigers to just 269 yards with an average of 3.6 yards a carry. They kept Bo Nix off-balance all day. He never looked comfortable. He was hit right off the bat. The Gators forced him into long third-down conversations. As stated on ESPN College Gameday if the Gators could keep Nix out of a short third-down conversation they would win. They did just that. The Auburn rush game lead by JaTarvious Whitlow never got going. He was either tackled at the line or behind it. This is the type of defense that can keep you in tight games. The offense still needs tinkering, but head coach Dan Mullen will have time to do that. The defense and the rest of the Gators will have their hands full next week with they travel to play the LSU Tigers.
Bad: Bo Nix
Coming into this game of course, with the help of JaTarvious Whitlow and the running game they were looking great. Nix never got on track. He went 11 for 27 for 145 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Nix is also a big part of the run game and had 10 carries for 18 yards. He has some growing to do and this will be a game that he looks back on. If the Tigers are going to threat the Alabama Crimson Tide Nix will have to be much better. But what the Gators did yesterday is show a blueprint on how to beat the Tigers. If you can keep Nix and the run game down the Tigers are beatable. He will also have to keep the turnovers down. Three interceptions did not help the Tigers. He will have to make sure to eliminate those.
This game was a great matchup. After the game, many called a very ugly game. The reason is all the turnovers. The Florida Gators had four and the Auburn Tigers had three. The Gators had four fumbles and some of those turnovers the Tigers capitalize. On the flip side so did the Gators they took three interceptions and turn into points. Many of us would not expect to see this many turnovers between two top 10 teams. This game could have been much more high scoring if not with all the turnovers. It may have been a better game and not as sloppy. Either way, the Gators won at home and now move to next week to Death Valley to play the LSU Tigers.
