USF Bulls: Good, Bad, and Ugly vs SMU Mustangs
Coming into the week the USF Bulls were heavy underdogs to the SMU Mustangs. Well, they were outplayed right from the opening kickoff. The offense once again still is looking to get in the groove. No matter who seems to be at quarterback whether its Jordan McCloud or Blake Barnett the offense is flat as a whooping cushion. They trailed 34-0 at the half and the Mustangs took advantage of all the Bulls mistakes. The Bulls on defense made stops when they needed too. There were adjustments that needed to be made. The Bulls had under 100 yards of total offense in the first half. The boo birds were out from the start of the second quarter and continued throughout the game. A bright moment was a retuning soldier that surprised his family. Here is the good, bad and ugly.
The Good – Mustangs fast-paced offense
The only drive that we didn’t see it was the opening one. The Mustangs came out and ran the no-huddle fast-paced offense. It led to 34 first-half points. The run game lead by Xavier Jones was nearly unstoppable. When there was a hole Jones and company found it and exploited it. On that opening drive, there could have been a pick-six but it was tipped, and the Mustangs drove down but punted. Steve Buechele was recruited and played for USF head coach Charlie Strong. The SMU Mustangs offense never missed a beat. In their first three wins, the spread worked and the Bulls had no answer.
The Bad – Jordan McCloud
McCloud was making his second start. He looked like what a freshman quarterback looks like. McCloud threw two interceptions and looked confused in the first half. He went 4 for 10 for 48-yards. The offense went backward on most of their drives. The two interceptions were very costly. The second one he threw was just a bad throw on a deep pass. He was sacked six times. On some of those sacks, he was trying to make a play that it should have tried to make. Now the question is will he start next week. The reason I say that is that Blake Barnett came in as quarterback in the second half. Barnett looked like he did last year he moved the ball with his feet and arm. Charlie Strong will have that question to answer in the press conference.
The Ugly – Bulls Offense
Now the USF Bulls are four games into the season. Kerwin Bell continues to look frustrated. The Bulls have no run game Jordan Cronkrite, Trevon Sands, and Johnny Ford cannot get anything going. Also, tight end Mitchell Wilcox has seemed at times to disappear. Other than the game against South Carolina State the offense can’t score points. The road does not get any easier for the Bulls. This team is full of talent and shouldn’t look like this, but they need a fire under their butts. Let’s hope as they travel to play the UConn Huskies they can play a complete game and get a win.
