USF Bulls Football: Looking Ahead to SMU Mustangs

It’s time for week 5 of college football. Of course, that means you have big impact games that could derail a team’s chance of making the elusive College Football Playoff. For the USF Bulls and SMU Mustangs, those at the time being are just dreams. Both teams play in a non-power 5 conference.

This is the same conference at the UCF Knights who have been clamoring to be part of the playoff for the last few years. They, unfortunately, took a loss last week to the University of Pittsburgh Panthers. These two teams will play a mid-afternoon game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. Kickoff is set for 4 pm this will be the USF Bulls‘ third home game of the season. For the SMU Mustangs, it will be their third road game. The Mustangs are coming off a big road win against the TCU Horned Frogs.

SMU Mustangs (4-0)

The Mustangs are looking to crack the top 25. They come into the game against the Bulls at 4-0. Their biggest win coming last week against the Horned Frogs. Now this game marks the beginning of conference play for both them and the Bulls. This will an interesting matchup with SMU’s quarterback being one aspect of the conference game.

Shane Buechele was a freshman quarterback at the University of Texas when Charlie Strong was there. Strong said earlier that he has watched Buechele grow and he is much different quarterback then he was then. Buechele has helped the Mustangs to 4-0 and trying to get them to 5-0 for the first time since 1983. Look for the Mustangs to come quickly on offense like did last week against the Horned Frogs. They even ran a trick play on their first series. Look for them to take it to the Bulls.

USF Bulls (1-2)

The Bulls come into this game after their bye week. Now they will have their hands full with the Mustangs. They are very explosive on offense and this looks a lot like the matchup with the Wisconsin Badgers.

The Badgers shut out the Bulls on opening night, 49-0. The Bulls will have to limit mistakes and score on their offensive possessions. Many believe coming into the season the Bulls would be a team making a run at the Knights for the conference championship. Their record stands at 1-2 and they need to get off to a good start in conference play. If Jordan McCloud and the Bulls offense can repeat what they did last week, then it will be a close game. If not it will be another long night.

Now if there is any good news for the Bulls is that they have had two weeks to prepare. It might be the only thing that could help them. Many experts have the Mustangs winning by 14 points or more. Hopefully, the Bulls can keep it close and not have a repeat of the Badgers game. We will just have to wait and see.
