Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Goal Line Stand Takes Down Panthers

On a fourth down, the Carolina Panthers needed one-yard to pick up the first down and they needed a couple of more to reach the end zone. Carolina tried to fake the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of their shoes with a wildcat play ran by Christan McCaffrey, but Vernon Hargreaves III shut down the edge and McCaffrey did not pick up the first down with 1:28 remaining in regulation.

Tampa Bay was able to survive for its first win of the season on the road 20-14. It was also Bruce Arians’ first win with the Buccaneers.

Tampa Bay’s defense has looked much better in their first two games with Todd Bowles calling the defensive plays. Their defense was one of the worst units in football last season and it has improved a lot so far in the first two games.

They held Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey in check. He only rushed for 37 yards on 16 carries. McCaffrey has caught two passes for 16 yards receiving.

With Tampa Bay trailing 6-3 in the second-quarter, Jameis Winston threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Chris Godwin. He finished with eight receptions for 121 yards receiving and a touchdown.

Winston completed 16-of-25 passes for 208 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for nine yards on four carries. Jameis Winston also looked much better in this game compared to Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers at home when he threw two pick-sixes.

Mike Evans caught four passes for 61 yards receiving.

With Carolina trailing 10-9 in the third-quarter, Joey Slye made a 51-yard field goal for the Panthers to give them a 12-10 lead. Slye is a rookie and he made four field goals in the game. Joey Slye also hit them from 32, 37, and 54 yards.

Peyton Barber had a 16-yard touchdown run for Tampa Bay in the third quarter. He finished with 82 yards rushing on 23 carries and a score. Barber also caught one pass for seven yards receiving.

The Buccaneers did a pretty good job of dictating the game upfront.

Carolina scored on a safety in the fourth-quarter by Luke Kuechly when he tackled Peyton Barber in the end zone.

When Tampa Bay got the ball back later in the fourth, they had a 6:32 minute drive. It led to a 32-yard field goal by Matt Gay with 2:31 remaining in regulation. He also made a 40-yard field goal earlier in the game.

Cam Newton was not accurate with the football in this game and he made some very bad throws. It looks like Newton is either washed up or he is playing injured. There is no way Cam Newton is healthy even though he mentioned after the game that he needs to do some soul searching in order to help his team get back on track.

Newton completed 24-of-50 passes for 324 yards. He rushed for zero yards on two carries.

The Carolina Panthers leading receiver was Greg Olsen with six receptions for 110 yards receiving. D.J. Moore also had a nice game on the outside with nine receptions for 89 yards receiving.

There was also a short weather delay in this game.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-1) will host the New York Giants next Sunday. The Carolina Panthers (0-2) will be on the road against the Arizona Cardinals (0-0-1) next Sunday.
