Green Bay Packers Unknown Defense Shuts Down the Chicago Bears
The 100th season of the NFL kicked off on Thursday night at Soldier Field in Chicago between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears. It is one of the oldest rivalries in the NFL. It seemed as if both of these teams turned back the clock on Thursday night with a defensive battle.
With under two minutes remaining, Green Bay had a 10-3 lead. Mitch Trubisky was picked off in the end zone by Adrian Amos. Amos played with the Chicago Bears last season. The Packers won the game by that exact score. Matt LaFleur won his first game as an NFL head coach after being the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans last season.
There were so many surprising things that occurred in this game. One of them was how poorly Trubisky played. He completed 26-of-45 passes for 228 yards and threw one interception. Mitchell Trubisky was missing wide receivers right and left. He also didn’t throw the ball deep at all.
A lot of people bet on him to win the MVP award this season and those people might be way off if his play continues. Trubisky must be better in Week 2 or it is going to be a long season for this offense.
He also rushed for 11 yards on three carries. Chicago also didn’t run the ball enough. Mike Davis rushed for 19 yards on five carries and rookie David Montgomery rushed for 18 yards on six carries. Davis also caught six passes for 17 yards receiving and Montgomery also caught one pass for 27 yards receiving.
Allen Robinson was Chicago’s leading receiver with seven receptions for 102 yards receiving. Tarik Cohen caught eight passes for 49 yards receiving and Taylor Gabriel caught two passes for 24 yards receiving.
The only points that came in the game for the Bears were in the first-quarter when Eddie Pineiro kicked a 38-yard field goal.
Mason Crosby also made a 39-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Rodgers completed 18-of-30 passes for 203 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for eight yards on three carries. It wasn’t his best game by any means, but Aaron Rodgers was sure happy his defense helped him out.
Jimmy Graham caught three passes for 30 yards receiving and a score. Marquez Valdes-Scantling was their leading receiver with four receptions for 52 yards receiving. He also rushed once for no yards.
Davante Adams was held in check with four receptions for 36 yards receiving.
Aaron Jones was the leading rusher with 39 yards rushing on 13 carries. He also caught one pass for no yards.
The Green Bay Packers defense recorded five sacks in the game and Preston Smith recorded 1.5 sacks in the game. They have not been good in years past. Will have to see if this keeps up as the season goes on. This game was about how bad Chicago’s offense was.
The Chicago Bears defense looked faster and stronger than last season. They recorded five sacks as well. Leonard Floyd recorded two sacks.
The Green Bay Packers (1-0) will host the Minnesota Vikings next Sunday. Chicago (0-1) will travel to face the Denver Broncos next Sunday.
