Jacksonville State Gamecocks: Three Games To Watch In 2019

The Jacksonville State Gamecocks are coming off a successful 2018 college football, but the goal isn’t just a winning season and playoff berth. The goal for Jacksonville State is to win the Ohio Valley Conference again, make the playoffs, and win the FCS National Championship. Last season the Jacksonville State Gamecocks won the 2018 Ohio Valley Conference Championship, made the FCS playoffs, and finished 9-4 with a loss in the second round to Maine 55-27. The 2019 college football season for the Gamecocks should be another good and successful season as well as another chance at the coveted FCS National Championship.

Jacksonville State has a lot of talent coming back this year and could definitely make a run at the title. Zerrick Cooper the junior quarterback for the Jacksonville State Gamecocks and leader of this offense will have a big part of their opportunity at any championships. On Jacksonville State’s journey to the playoffs, they have some pretty important and interesting games to play this year. In the regular season, there are three games that Jacksonville State should focus on and fans of the Gamecocks should circle on the schedule. Let’s take a look at the three games to watch in 2019 for the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.

Week 3: Eastern Washington at Jacksonville State September 14th, 2019

Like Jacksonville State, the Eastern Washington Eagles are an FCS powerhouse too. In 2019 Eastern Washington is coming to Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium to play the Jacksonville State Gamecocks to see who can strengthen their claim on the FCS National title. The last meeting we saw between the two teams Eastern Washington beat JSU 35-24 in 2013 in the quarter-finals of the FCS playoffs. This time around in the Gamecocks own house, on Jacksonville State’s own turf, they can get some small piece of revenge, and possibly slow the Eagles title hopes down. This Jacksonville State Gamecocks team has more talent than previous teams and if any JSU team could beat Eastern Washington it’s the 2019 squad. This should be a classic game and a very interesting one to watch.
Prediction: 42 Jacksonville State 38 Eastern Washington

Week 4: North Alabama at Jacksonville State September 21st, 2019

The rivalry for the two Alabama schools is being renewed in 2019 on September the 21st. The Jacksonville State Gamecocks lead the series over the North Alabama Lions 25-18-3. The most recent game being a 31-12 victory in 2016 by JSU. This game is one to watch because it is an in-state rivalry and North Alabama will be trying to play the underdog trying to upset Jacksonville State. A lot of history between these two teams, but if the Gamecocks play to their potential this shouldn’t be close.

North Alabama may put up more of a fight than people think in this game with their rival. Because it is a rivalry I hope it is a close game to make it more interesting to watch. Based off of the talent the Gamecocks have on the roster and how successful I think Jacksonville State can be I’m going with JSU.
Prediction: 35 Jacksonville State 17 North Alabama

Week 8: Southeast Missouri at Jacksonville State October 19th, 2019

Going into this game the Jacksonville State Gamecocks need to be rolling and undefeated with a 7-0 record. The offense, led by quarterback Zerrick Cooper and wide receiver Josh Pearson, will need to be firing on all cylinders in the passing game. The rushing game will need to be solid as well by this point. The offense also can not afford costly turnovers in this game. Southeast Missouri will take advantage of the extra possessions if they get any. In the 2018 matchup between the two schools, JSU passed the ball well with 323 yards and 2 touchdowns. However, 3 interceptions hurt the team as they would fall 37-14. The rushing game never got going with only 99 yards on 29 carries combined. This put pressure on the passing game, forcing turnovers.

The Gamecocks defense also allowed Southeast Missouri to score 37 points in the loss. This will need to change if Jacksonville State wants to win this Ohio Valley Conference game. There is some added motivation for the Jacksonville State Gamecocks besides it being a conference game. They would be a step closer to a conference title, and a step towards the FCS National title. It is also homecoming for Jacksonville State. All these factors point to a big-time game that the Gamecocks can win and it could be one of those season-defining wins for JSU.
Prediction: 38 Jacksonville State 28 Southeast Missouri

The Jacksonville State Gamecocks schedule has games of all kinds on it. Although these three stood out the most to me. In fact, JSU, in 2019, will be very talented and hard to beat for any team that tries. With improvements on offense, defense, just all around, and a program ready to win, the time is now for Jacksonville State. This is a team that is definitely on the rise. They could very well be one of the all-time great FCS college football teams. No doubt that JSU will be quite interesting to watch throughout all of college football season. They for sure will be worth following in 2019.
Regular Season Prediction: (12-0) (8-0)
