Alabama State Hornets: An Outlook On The 2019 Schedule
The Alabama State Hornets are coming off a less than impressive 2018 college football season. Alabama State finished the year with a 4-7 record and couldn’t ever really find their identity.
In 2018 the Alabama State Hornets finished fourth in the SWAC East and will look to improve on that in 2019. Alabama State will have a number of key players returning this season to provide veteran leadership to this team. The offense will need to find a way to increase production and move the ball against opponents to win some games in 2019. The defense as well will need to improve dramatically to help win those needed games. The defense for the Hornets last season was terrible giving up 37 points a game.
Alabama State will work to improve on all levels on the defense to allow fewer points and yards allowed. Maybe at some point during the season the Alabama State Hornets will hit a stride and roll off a couple of solid wins. I think that the Hornets can win about half of their games which is a solid improvement from 4-7. Alabama State has a tough schedule, but they can still win some games if they get things going on offense and defense. Let’s take a look at the Alabama State Hornets 2019 schedule and see how they will fair.
Game 1: Alabama State at UAB August 29th, 2019
Alabama State heads into the season opener on the road and as a heavy underdog to UAB. The Hornets are coming off a losing season last year and the Blazers are coming off a 2018 season where they won 11 games. The Blazers are trending upwards at a faster pace than other Non-Power 5 teams and the gap between how good they are compared to Alabama State will show. This is a tune-up game for UAB who may start slow but will pull away late and beat Alabama State. The Hornets can put some points up early to keep it close if they can get the offense going. Hopefully, they can work hard, fight in this game, and get some momentum build up in this game so they can find an identity for the rest of the season.
Prediction: 38 UAB 21 Alabama State
Game 2: Tuskegee at Alabama State September 7th, 2019
In a game that the Alabama State Hornets can win, they play at home against the Tuskegee Golden Tigers. With home-field advantage and if the Hornets use any momentum they may have if they play well against UAB, they could beat Tuskegee. Last season the Hornets won 26-20 in overtime against the Golden Tigers and escaped with the victory. The things they did then and will need to do again is to keep a balanced offense.
They need production in the passing game and in the rushing category to really score like they should against Tuskegee. Scoring in bunches is crucial for Alabama State and also they need turnovers on defense. They had two interceptions last year in this game look for two again this season. Those things are a necessity to pull out a win in game two.
Prediction: 28 Alabama State 21 Tuskegee
Game 3: Kennesaw State at Alabama State September 14th, 2019
For Alabama State this game will be an uphill climb and last season’s matchup was nothing short of embarrassing against Kennesaw State. The Hornets defense allowed 563 yards total, 417 of which was rushing yards and 146 passing yards. To break it down, last year’s game the Kennesaw State Owls ran it down Alabama State’s throat 55 times and got 6 rushing touchdowns on route to the 62-13 win. This season the Hornets need to focus on defense and clamping down on allowing opponents to score.
If they can get tougher on the defensive side of the ball they can compete and give the offense opportunities to score. Alabama State will try to compete, but they should come into this as heavy underdogs. The Owls might not hang 60 plus points on them, but Alabama State will struggle early and often.
Prediction: 45 Kennesaw State 24 Alabama State
Game 4: Grambling State at Alabama State September 21st, 2019
Looking at the 2018 matchup, the problems that need to be fixed are finding the endzone and the defense learning how to stop the rushing attack. Alabama State had an okay amount of passing and rushing yards, but zero trips to the endzone in the 34-0 loss to Grambling State. In the passing game, the Hornets were a combined 17 for 41 passing for 167 yards which pose the problem completing passes. If they can work on getting closer to a fifty percent completion rating we could see a couple of touchdowns.
On defense, the Alabama State Hornets have to stop offenses running the ball as Grambling State ran for a total of 209 yards and a touchdown. Improvement in these areas is key to keeping it close in some games this year. Alabama State will get some points on the board this year and surprise some people in this game.
Prediction: 27 Alabama State 24 Grambling State
Bye Week September 28th, 2019
Alabama State will have an off week and will need to use it to prep for one of their tougher opponents on their schedule. The Hornets go into the bye week with a record of 2-2 through the first four games of the season.
Game 5: Alcorn State at Alabama State October 5th, 2019
Alabama State was an underdog going into last year’s game when they upset Alcorn State 28-25 in five overtimes. In that game, Alabama State forced turnovers and was able to complete a majority of their pass attempts. The Hornets will be fighting in this game to try and pull out another upset. I think Alabama State fights hard and keeps it close, but Alcorn State doesn’t lose two years in a row.
Prediction: 31 Alcorn State 28 Alabama State
Game 6: Alabama State at Jackson State October 12th, 2019
The Alabama State Hornets go into this match trying for an upset against the Jackson State Tigers. Last year the Tigers shut down Alabama State in all aspects and won 20-2. This year Alabama State must win to stay around .500 win percentage and will need some luck. Look for this to be an upset win that the Hornets might grab.
Prediction: 21 Alabama State 20 Jackson State
Bye Week October 19th, 2019
Alabama State has another off week and must use it to prepare for the schedule ahead. Through six games and with five to go the Alabama State Hornets will be 3-3.
Game 7: The Magic City Classic Alabama State vs Alabama A&M October 26th, 2019
This is a must-win for the Hornets and a chance to get a solid start on the back end of the season. Last year Alabama A&M passed the ball well for 322 yards and 3 touchdowns as they pulled away late winning 27-10. Alabama State has to protect the football and can’t give the game away to get a much-needed win. They can pull out a close one here and escape with a win.
Prediction: 17 Alabama State 14 Alabama A&M
Game 8: Alabama State at Mississippi Valley State November 2nd, 2019
The Hornets should play a solid game and be able to win on the road. Alabama State pulled the win out in overtime last year over the Delta Devils 31-24. Balanced on offense is a key to win for Alabama State in this game. If they play well this season they can do better than an overtime win and keep the momentum going.
Prediction: 35 Alabama State 21 Mississippi Valley State
Game 9: Alabama State at Texas Southern November 9th, 2019
On the road in back to back weeks, the Hornets could win this game as well. Last year they won 30-21 and Alabama State overall did well in that game. What they can work on in the 2019 matchup is less turnovers as they had two interceptions in the 2018 football game. The Hornets get a solid win here late in the season.
Prediction: 31 Alabama State 20 Texas Southern
Game 10: Alabama State at Florida State November 16th, 2019
The Florida State Seminoles go into this looking at it as a tune-up game and the Alabama State Hornets want to show that they aren’t a pushover team. Alabama State could put some points on the board, but the Seminoles have a lot of firepower and depth at every position. Florida State will win in Doak Campbell Stadium.
Prediction: 52 Florida State 14 Alabama State
Bye Week November 23rd, 2019
Going into the final game the Alabama State Hornets have an extra week to prepare and sit with a record of 6-4. Final regular-season game is at home versus Prairie View A&M to finish the year out.
Game 11: Prairie View A&M at Alabama State November 28th, 2019
Alabama State got blown out in 2018 by Prairie View A&M 66-13. Jalen Morton quarterback for Prairie View accounted for six touchdowns in that game four were passing and two rushing. Morton is a junior coming back and will look to be a force again this year in another game that shouldn’t be too close. Alabama State will fight all season, but they aren’t going to win all their games.
Prediction: 48 Prairie View A&M 21 Alabama State
Final Record Prediction: Overall (6-5) SWAC (5-2)
Alabama State could do well this year in some games, but will still lose some. The Hornets will fight all season long and put some good games together. Overall Alabama State will improve on offense in the passing game, on offense in the rushing game, and on defense all around. The record improvement from 4-7 to 6-5 and from fourth in the SWAC East to my prediction of second in the SWAC East is good. If they can get things going, they will be in contention for the conference in the next few years. The Alabama State Hornets will be an interesting SWAC team in 2019 and will be worth keeping an eye on.
