NHL: The 5 Best Centers in the Game

The NHL has many stars. A new season is just a month away. We will start preseason hockey next month. Every team and fan will tell you their players or team is the best. Those players will make the difference as a team makes a run at the Stanley Cup. Here are the top 5 centers currently in the NHL: Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, John Tavares, and Steven Stamkos.


  1. Connor McDavid (Edmonton Oilers)

McDavid might be the best player not just center in the NHL. He played in 78 games during the 2018-19 season. McDavid tallied 116 points with 41 goals and 75 assists. He finished behind Hart Trophy winner Nikita Kucherov who tallied 128 points. On top of that, he had 9 power-play goals with 33 power-play points. McDavid played the penalty kill he as well had 2 shorthanded points with a lone short-handed goal. The Oilers didn’t have many wins, but McDavid had 9 game-winning goals.

  1. Sidney Crosby (Pittsburg Penguins)

Crosby is not liked by all. In Pittsburg, he is loved by Penguins fans. Crosby helped the Penguins get the postseason. Unfortunately, the Penguins got swept in the first round by the New York Islanders. Crosby had 100 points with 35 goals and 65 assists. During the playoff, he played in all four games and only tallied 1 point. That 1 point was an assist. He had 3 game-winning goals.

  1. Nathan MacKinnon (Colorado Avalanche)

MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche were a surprise in the NHL. He played in all 82 games for the Avalanche. MacKinnon tallied 99 points with 41 goals and 58 assists. He also 6 game-winning goals on helping the Avalanche make it to the playoffs. They took out the top-seeded Calgary Flames in 5 games. He played in 12 playoff games with 6 goals and 7 assists tallying 13 points. During their playoff run, he had 3 game-winning goals. Look for him to again be a leader and lead the Avalanche to another good season in 2019-20 season.

  1. John Tavares (Toronto Maple Leafs)

Tavares was the man for the New York Islanders. He recently signed as a free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He played in all 82 games tallying 88 points. Tavares had 47 goals and 41 assists. He led the Maple Leafs to the playoffs. The Maple Leafs ran into the Boston Bruins again. The Bruins defeated them in 7 games. He tallied 5 points with 2 goals and 3 assists. The Maple Leafs will be a team to be reckoned with.

  1. Steven Stamkos (Tampa Bay Lightning)

Stamkos help lead the Lightning to the Presidents trophy. The Lightning had 64 wins. They were the best team in hockey. Stamkos tallied 98 points with 45 goals and 53 assists. His playoff stats are short with just 4 games. The Lightning was swept by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round. With him and Nikita Kucherov, the Lightning was a powerhouse. He had 2 points in the four games 1 point and 1 assist. Stamkos will be a big part for the Lightning moving forward.
