Tampa Bay Lightning: Finally Some Good News for Tampa Bay
The Tampa Bay Lightning are solid between the pipes. They signed their starting goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy to an 8-year extension. He will make 76-million dollars over those eight years. This was the right decision for the Lightning they now have a starting goaltender for a while. Vasilevskiy has more than earn that contract. He is part of the young force the Lightning have built.
We all know what happened last year with the Lightning. It is time to turn the page and look forward to October 3rd against the Florida Panthers. The Lightning will once again be the favorite to win the Stanley Cup. Vasilevskiy is coming off his Vezina Trophy win. His extension will not kick in until the 2020 season. In that season the NHL will have another expansion draft. This will be where every team except for the Las Vegas Golden Knights will have to give up two players.
General manager Julien Brisebois announced who Vasilevskiy back up will be. Curtis McElhinney will be the backup goalie. McElhinney is more than capable of taking on that role. He has been a starter at some points in a career. The Lightning earlier last week traded away Ryan Callahan to the Ottawa Senators in return they got some draft picks and goaltender Mike Condon. Callahan was put on the long-term injured reserve list. He has been told by doctors that his career could be over.
With the Callahan trade, it opens cap space to sign center Brayden Point. Point has been the best center for the Lightning the past couple of years. The Lightning will need to get Point signed and signed soon. Now the most interesting aspect is that the Lighting now has four goalies on the roster. Vasilevskiy, McElhinney, Condon, and Domingue. Condon is in a similar position that Callahan is in. He is not on the verge on his career being over but he trying to come back from an injury. Domingue was a great backup last year while Vasilevskiy was injured.
The Lightning is in an advantageous position last year one of their strengths was their depth. I know this team will find a way to get over what happened last year. Head coach Jon Cooper will find a way to get the Lightning to bounce back. Cooper has ownership on his back. Jeff Vinik has been great since taking over the Lightning. Vinik cares about the fans. He has shown with all the money and investments he has put into Amalie Arena and Channelside Drive where the arena sits on.
Many fans worried when the announcement of the contract came out. Many thought there goes the chance of re-signing Point. The Lightning will find a way to get him signed. This franchise is the bright spot in the Tampa Bay area. As a Lightning fan, we have remarkable things coming. Now that Andrei Vasilevskiy is here for a long time to come it makes it better. Look for the Lightning to be right back in the thick of it in 2019-20 season.
