Chicago Cubs: A Look Inside the Team’s Farm System

The Chicago Cubs have made it to the playoffs for the last four seasons. Chicago is on the verge of making it to the playoffs for the fifth straight season. The Cubs sit in first place in the National League Central with a 55-47 record. Chicago is only up 0.5 games on the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs sit in this position once again because of how well they have drafted over the years, but Chicago’s farm system isn’t as strong as it used to be. Who are some of the top prospects in their farm system?

Nico Hoerner

The top prospect in Chicago’s farm system is Nico Hoerner. He is 22 years old and is projected to reach the majors sometime next season. Addison Russell was supposed to be the shortstop for the next several years, but his off the field issues might make some room for Hoerner to be the full-time starter in the near future. Russell was demoted to the minors to make room for Wilson Contreras. Nico Hoerner was a first-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. He has only played in 41 games so far this season. His batting average is .278 with two home runs and 14 RBI’s, along with three stolen bases. Hoerner’s on-base percentage is .345. He is a very good contact hitter and Nico Hoerner is currently playing in Double-A with the Tennessee Smokies. He also has some range defensively.

Miguel Amaya

The second-best prospect in the Cubs farm system is catcher, Miguel Amaya. It is going to be very difficult for him to be a starter in the big leagues because of Wilson Contreras. Amaya might have to be a starting catcher on another team. He is projected to reach the majors in 2021 and Miguel Amaya is currently playing in High-A with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. In 72 games played so far this season, his batting average is .229 with eight home runs and 40 RBI’s, along with two stolen bases. Amaya’s on-base percentage is .340. He is only 20 years old and he signed as an international free agent on July 17, 2015.

Brailyn Marquez

The third best prospect in the Chicago Cubs farm system is left-handed pitcher, Brailyn Marquez. He is also 20 years old and is projected to reach the majors in 2021. Marquez has the potential to be a solid starter in the majors one day. He was signed as an international free agent on July 23, 2015. Brailyn Marquez has a very strong fastball and curveball, but he needs work on his changeup. Marquez is playing for Single-A South Bend Cubs. His record so far this season is 3-4 with a 4.27 ERA. In 65.1 innings pitched, he has given up 63 hits and 40 runs. Brailyn Marquez has walked 42 batters and has struck out 80.

Adbert Alzolay

The fourth-best prospect in their farm system is right-handed pitcher, Adbert Alzolay. He is currently on the seven-day injured list and Alzolay is currently playing for the Chicago Cubs in the majors. In fact, Adbert Alzolay signed as an international free agent on November 28, 2012. Making him only 24-years-old. He is also very good at throwing an effective fastball in the 90s and a curveball in the 80s. His changeup also needs work.

Alzolay’s record in the minors so far this season is 2-4 with a 5.48 ERA. In 47.2 innings pitched, he has given up 46 hits and 31 runs. Adbert Alzolay has walked 22 batters and has struck out 63. He made his MLB debut on June 20, 2019. His record is 1-1 with a 7.15 ERA. In 11.1 innings pitched, Alzolay has given up 12 hits and nine runs. He has walked seven batters and has struck out 12 batters.

Cole Roederer

The fifth-best prospect in Chicago’s farm system us outfielder, Cole Roederer. He was drafted in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft. Roederer is only 19 years old and he isn’t projected to reach the majors until 2022. Cole Roederer could very well be an everyday player once he gets there. Also, Roderer is currently playing for the South Bend Cubs in Single-A. In 74 games played so far this season, he has hit five home runs and 37 RBI’s, along with 10 stolen bases. His on-base percentage is .298.

Aramis Ademan

The sixth-best prospect in the Cubs farm system is shortstop, Aramis Ademan. They have some nice depth at this position in their organization. Ademan might need to be a starter with another team. He was signed as an international free agent on July 2. Aramis Ademan is currently playing in High-A. In 84 games played so far this season, his batting average so far this season is .234 with five home runs and 30 RBI’s, along with 13 stolen bases. Ademan’s on-base percentage is .344. He is 20 years old and is projected to reach the majors in 2021.

Brennen Davis

The seventh-best prospect in Chicago Cubs farm system is outfielder, Brennen Davis. He is currently on the seven-day injured list. Davis was a second-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. He is only 19 years old and is projected to reach the majors in 2022. Brennen Davis has a ton of upside. In 45 games played in so far this season, his batting average so far this season is .296 with five home runs and 23 RBI’s, along with three stolen bases. Davis’s on-base percentage is .370. He is currently playing in Single-A.

Cory Abbott

The ninth-best prospect in their farm system is right-handed pitcher, Cory Abbott. He was a second-round pick in the 2017 MLB Draft. Thus Abbott is currently playing in Double-A. He is 23 years old and is projected to reach the majors sometime next season. Cory Abbott only throws in the low 90s, but he has a ton of cut on his fastball. Abbott also has some solid secondary pitches as well to get batters out. His record so far this season is 5-7 with a 3.86 ERA. However, in 105 innings pitched, he has given up 97 hits and 50 runs. Cory Abbott has also walked 38 batters and has struck out 109.
