NFL: Top 10 Safeties Heading Into the 2019 Season

Safeties might be the toughest position to play on the defensive side of the ball. They have to cover like a cornerback and safeties have to tackle like a linebacker. Who are the Top 10 safeties heading into the 2019 NFL season?

10. Antoine Bethea, New York Giants

Bethea played for the Arizona Cardinals last season. He recorded 121 tackles and forced one fumble. Antoine Bethea is 34 years old. He will replace Landon Collins in the secondary this season.

9. Eddie Jackson, Chicago Bears

The Bears had a really good defense last season. Jackson had a nose for the football. He only had 51 tackles, but Eddie Jackson also had 21 pass deflections. He picked off six passes and had two interceptions returned for touchdowns. Jackson also forced two fumbles, recovered one fumble, and had one returned for a touchdown.

8. Damontae Kazee, Atlanta Falcons

Kazee had a breakout year last season for the Atlanta Falcons. They were not very good in the secondary, but he might have been their best player in the secondary. Damontae Kazee recorded 82 tackles, picked off seven passes, had 17 pass deflections, and forced one fumble.

7. Kevin Byard, Tennessee Titans

Byard is one of the most underrated safeties in the game. He might be the most important player in the Tennessee Titans in the secondary. Kevin Byard recorded 90 tackles and had 12 pass deflections last season. He also picked off four passes.

6. Harrison Smith, Minnesota Vikings

Smith is a ball-hawking player in the Minnesota Vikings secondary. If they ever lost him to injury, Minnesota’s secondary would be in big time trouble. He recorded 84 tackles last season. Harrison Smith also had nine pass deflections and picked off three passes. He also forced one fumble and recovered two of them.

5. Derwin James, Los Angeles Chargers

James had a solid year as a rookie last season and he made the Chargers secondary a lot better. He covers very well and Derwin James is also a solid tackler. He recorded 105 tackles and had 17 pass deflections. James also picked off three passes.

4. Shawn Williams, Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals did not have very good cornerbacks last season, but Shawn Williams was solid in the secondary at safety. He recorded 110 tackles, had 14 pass deflections, five interceptions, and one pick six. Williams also forced one fumble.

3. Jessie Bates, Cincinnati Bengals

Bates was tremendous as a safety during his rookie year last year. He has the potential to even be better in his second season. Jesse Bates is only 22 years old. He recorded 111 tackles, had 10 pass deflections, three interceptions, and one pick six.

2. John Johnson, Los Angeles Rams

Johnson has become an anchor on the back end for the Los Angeles Rams defense. He is only 23 years old and John Johnson is also very strong. He recorded 119 tackles, broke up 15 passes, and picked off four passes. Johnson also forced a fumble.

1. Jamal Adams, New York Jets

Adams is a hard-hitting safety. He is 23 years old and Jamal Adams made it to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career. He recorded 115 tackles, broke up 13 passes, and picked off one pass. Adams also forced three fumbles and recovered one. He is one of the strongest players in the NFL and Jamal Adams will continue to get stronger.

Players I thought about putting on this list: Malcolm Jenkins of the Philadelphia Eagles, Landon Collins of the Washington Redskins, Duron Harmon of the New England Patriots, and Earl Thomas of the Baltimore Ravens.
