Oklahoma City Thunder: Where Will Russell Westbrook Get Traded To?
There was a shock across the NBA world when Kawhi Leonard decided to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers. There was also a subsequent shock when Los Angeles decided to trade for Paul George from the Oklahoma City Thunder. With George being traded from the Oklahoma City, the Thunder will most likely look into trading superstar point guard Russell Westbrook.
He has four years remaining on his contract, including a player option for the 2022-2023 season. Westbrook will be owed over $38 million each season and he is 30 years old. Since most likely the Oklahoma City are in rebuild mode, where could they trade him to?
The first team that comes to mind is the Miami Heat. They have already acquired Jimmy Butler in a sign-and-trade from the Philadelphia 76ers.
The east is now even more wide open with Kawhi Leonard leaving the eastern conference. The favorites will either be the Milwaukee Bucks, the Philadelphia 76ers, or the Indiana Pacers.
Miami feels like they could be in the conversation if they make another move. A trade that could make sense for them is Russell Westbrook for Dion Waiters, Goran Dragic, Justise Winslow, and future draft picks.
The New York Knicks could be another team to trade for Westbrook. They have a ton of young players, but it may not be good for either side even though New York needs a superstar player in that mega market.
The third team that comes to mind is the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cleveland is going through a rebuilding phase, but do they think they are close to being a playoff team again? If so, they could most likely trade away Collin Sexton and another young player like Larry Nance Jr. or Dylan Windler. The Cavaliers would also trade either J.R. Smith or Brandon Knight.
Also, they could trade a couple of draft picks. Westbrook and Kevin Love would be reunited because they were college teammates at UCLA. However, the Cleveland Cavaliers are still listening to offers for Kevin Love so the plan of those two playing together could be scratched.
The fourth team that comes to mind is the Dallas Mavericks. Dallas feels like they are ready to turn the corner. The Mavericks need a point guard to pair with Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. A potential trade here could be Russell Westbrook for Jalen Brunson, Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee, and future draft picks.
Some other teams that could make a trade for Westbrook: Milwaukee Bucks, Toronto Raptors, Detroit Pistons, or San Antonio Spurs.
