NFL: Top 10 Quarterbacks Entering the 2019 Season

Quarterback is the most important in football. If teams do not have a very good quarterback, it will be hard to win games in the NFL. With training camp coming up at the end of July, who are the top 10 quarterbacks entering the 2019 season?

10. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons had a down year last season, but I did not realize how great of a year Matt Ryan actually had a season ago. He completed 69.4 percent of his passes for 4,924 yards 35 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Ryan was more of a fantasy quarterback than an actual quarterback a season ago because of how often Atlanta would have to play catch up in games considering the fact how bad the Falcons defense was. They will have a new offensive coordinator this season and it will be interesting to see what kind of numbers he puts up.

9. Baker Mayfield, Cleveland Browns

Mayfield blossomed into a solid quarterback after Hue Jackson was fired midseason. Baker Mayfield did not start until Week 4 against the Oakland Raiders, but he didn’t see his first game until Week 3 on a Thursday night against the New York Jets at home when Tyrod Taylor went out with an injury. Mayfield brought a spark of energy to this Cleveland Browns team and it looks like he will bring it for a long time. Cleveland looked a threat to make the playoffs late last season, but they fell short. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him be a top-five quarterback in the league at the end of the season depending on what kind of progress he takes. Last season, Mayfield completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 3,725 yards 27 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He will have weapons all over the field to throw to this season.

8. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints

Brees didn’t need to pass the ball a whole lot last season because of how good their running game was. This was one of the reasons why New Orleans almost went to the Super Bowl, actually they should have but we all don’t need to be reminded again about what happened in the NFC Championship Game against the Los Angeles Rams at home. Drew Brees is one of the greatest quarterbacks who ever played this game and he will be a first ballot hall of famer when he retires. Brees is 39 years old and people wonder how much longer he will even play in the NFL for. That is why Taysom Hill has taken some snaps and it is possible he might be the future quarterback in New Orleans. Drew Brees completed 74.4 percent of his passes for 3,992 yards 32 touchdowns and five interceptions.

7. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

He was at the root of leadership problems last season between him and Mike McCarthy, but Rodgers put up quality numbers once again last season. He completed 62.3 percent of his passes for 4,442 yards 25 touchdowns and two interceptions. Green Bay is hoping things are different this season for them under new Head Coach Matt LaFleur. There is no question that Aaron Rodgers is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL.

6. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks

Where would the Seattle Seahawks have been last season if it wasn’t for Russell Wilson? Seattle might have only won two games and they might have been drafting first or second overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. The Seahawks are glad they were able to sign him to a contract extension. Wilson was the main reason why Seattle reached the playoffs with a 10-6 record, but they lost on wild card weekend on the road against the Dallas Cowboys. Russell Wilson completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 3,448 yards 35 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

5. Tom Brady, New England Patriots

Tom Brady won his sixth super bowl with the New England Patriots last season, but he was not the MVP of the game. That category belonged to wide receiver Julian Edelman. Brady will be 42 entering this season and people wonder how much longer he will play for. Will his age start to show this season especially since tight end Rob Gronkowski retired from the sport? Or will Tom Brady continue to prove doubters wrong and get the job once again? It isn’t out of the question they could win a seventh super bowl and that would maybe it for a career. The New England Patriots would then have the most super bowl titles if they were to win it all this season. Brady completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 4,355 yards 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

4. Jared Goff, Los Angeles Rams

Jared Goff had a terrific year last season and it was one of the reasons why the Los Angeles Rams went to the super bowl. However, Goff had some bad moments at the end of the season. His completion percentage last season was 64.9 with 4,688 yards 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Jared Goff might need to play just as effectively this upcoming season because running back Todd Gurley might have some knee issues in the backfield and it could prevent the Rams offense from doing damage.

3. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers

Even though the Pittsburgh Steelers missed the playoffs last season, Ben Roethlisberger once again played at a level for them. He completed 67 percent of his passes for 5,129 yards 34 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Pittsburgh will not have the distractions of running back Le’Veon Bell or wide receiver Antonio Brown this upcoming season. It may not be a bad thing for this franchise.

2. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts

Andrew Luck and Head Coach Frank Reich was an excellent match for this last season. It might be this way for the next five to seven years if all goes according to plan. Luck had a ton of protection by his offensive line and he had a bounce-back season after Andrew Luck was shut down the previous season with a shoulder injury. He completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 4,593 39 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Indianapolis started last season 1-5, but they finished with a 10-6 record and the second wild card in the AFC. They won a playoff round against the Houston Texas on the road, but then they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round. This could be the year that Andrew Luck finally wins his first MVP award for the Colts.

1. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes shot out of a cannon immediately as the starting quarterback last season for the Kansas City Chiefs. He won the MVP award and Mahomes was tough to slow down. It was the right call for Kansas City to move on from Alex Smith last offseason. Patrick Mahomes has caught attention from all of the fans and players around the league. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him win the MVP award for a second consecutive season. His completion percentage last season was 66 and he threw for 5,097 yards 50 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Some other quarterbacks that I thought about putting on this list: Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans and Philip Rivers of the Los Angeles Chargers.

Are there any quarterbacks that you would put in this list? Leave a comment below.
