NFC South: Ranking the Teams by Their Quarterbacks

The NFC South has been home to some average quarterback play. This has not been one of the strongest divisions in history when it comes to the position. Some of the names include Chris Chandler (Atlanta Falcons), Bobby Hebert (New Orleans Saints), Jeff Garcia (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), and Jake Delhomme (Carolina Panthers). However, the current level of QB play has increased. Making the division one of the more competitive ones at times. Here is a look at how the NFC South stacks up per the quarterback position.

Jameis Winston – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Winston’s best year as quarterback of the Bucs was 2016. He led the team to a 9-7 record and threw for 4,090 yards. However, the last two season has been plagued by injuries and suspensions. Bucs GM brought in Bruce Arians to try and turn Winston around in 2019. There will need to be marked improvement for Winston to climb the NFC South quarterback rankings.

Cam Newton – Carolina Panthers

It is almost a tie between Newton and the number two QB on this list. Newton is well garnished with awards and such. Nonetheless, his playoff accolades keep him at number three. Newton and the Panthers have four playoff appearances in Newton’s career. He also only has three winning seasons. Thus Cam Newton sits as the third best QB in the NFC South.

Matt Ryan – Atlanta Falcons

Ryan is entering his 12th season as the quarterback of the Falcons. In those 12 seasons, he has had only missed 2 games, had seven winning seasons, six playoff appearances, and one Super Bowl appearance. Ryan also has one league MVP to his resume. He has been the face of the Falcons since they selected him third overall in the 2008 Draft. If he is healthy in 2019, the Falcons could be a contender for the NFC South.

Drew Brees – New Orleans Saints

Brees may be on the downside of his career, however, he is still playing at a high level. The Saints acquired Brees in free agency of 2006. Since that moment he has been the face of the NFC South. Especially at the quarterback position. During his Saints tenure, Brees has 7 winning seasons, 7 playoff appearances, one Super Bowl Championship, and a Super Bowl MVP. Although, I find it quite interesting that he has never won a league MVP. Nevertheless, Bree is possibly the greatest QB to ever grace the NFC South.

This is how the quarterbacks of the NFC South currently stack up. This will certainly change over the next couple of years.
