A Great Time to be a Baseball Fan in the State of Florida
The state of Florida gets mocked. In fact, a friend of mine that lives in Oklahoma tells me the state of Florida is at the brunt of most jokes. As a native Floridian who has lived in the state all my life, that isn’t the case. Over the weekend in the sports world, the state shined. All of these came in the sport of baseball. In two levels of college and professional.
The University of Tampa wins Division 2 National Championship
The Spartans have won 8 national champions. They defeated the number 1 seeded Colorado Mesa. The final score was 3-1. This marks their 3rd title in the last 10 years. The Spartans finished their season on an 11-game winning streak. From a local kid, this is great to see a local team win a title.
Florida State Seminoles make it to the college world series in their manager’s final season
This is the final season for manager Mark Martin. He has been at Florida State for 4o years. In all his seasons the team has never won less than 4o games. Now the Seminoles are one of eight remaining teams vying for the college world series. They defeated the LSU Tigers in extras to earn the spot. The Seminoles are not getting the best of odds but don’t count them out.
Tampa Bay Rays take 3 out 4 to get back into a first-place tie with the New York Yankees
The Tampa Bay Rays have been a solid team all season. How much it hates me to see this, but they beat my beloved Boston Red Sox 3 out of 4 games this past weekend. The Rays are tied with the New York Yankees for 1st place. They will definitely be a playoff team. At the beginning of the season, I thought the AL East would be a three-team race but right now its just the Rays and Yankees. It was a fantastic way to cap off the weekend in Florida based baseball.
