The Los Angeles Lakers Could Be in the Driver’s Seat Next Season
The Los Angeles Lakers did not make the postseason once again this past season and they have not made it since the 2011-2012 season. Los Angeles signed Lebron James last offseason and the first year did not go as planned. James made it to the NBA Finals eight straight seasons before missing the playoffs this past season.
He had a full offseason to rest and Lebron James will be ready to go next season. The Lakers hired Frank Vogel as head coach and Jason Kidd as an assistant coach. Magic Johnson decided to resign in the front office and this stirred up a ton of drama in Los Angeles.
In saying that, it seems as if everything has calmed down ever since. The Lakers are included in rumors to potentially acquire Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans. Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, and Brandon Ingram could potentially all be traded for him, but maybe only one or two of them could be traded for Anthony Davis especially if there is a third team that is involved in this trade.
If they were to get Anthony Davis, this would be a very good move for them. Kyrie Irving wants to either go to the Brooklyn Nets or the Los Angeles Lakers. It is quite possible that Irving would team up with Kevin Durant in Brooklyn. Nonetheless, now that Durant might be out for the next season with an Achilles injury, it is very possible that Irving reunites with LeBron James.
Los Angeles could also sign some key free agents like DeMarcus Cousins, Kemba Walker, Klay Thompson, Khris Middleton, Jimmy Butler, or others if they don’t land Anthony Davis or Kyrie Irving for some reason.
It is also possible that the Los Angeles strikeout entirely this summer and this would not be a good look for them. The last time they won the NBA title was in 2009-2010 against the Boston Celtics in seven games. They went back-to-back after they also defeated the Orlando Magic in the NBA Finals back in the 2008-2009 season.
With Kevin Durant’s injury and possibly being on the sideline all of next season, the door could open for the Los Angeles Lakers. They may have the chance to do some big things in 2019-2020 if the offseason goes right for them.
One of the reasons why Los Angeles could be in the driver’s next season is because there could be a lot of uncertainty out west with teams like the Denver Nuggets, the Portland Trail Blazers, the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Utah Jazz, or the San Antonio Spurs.
It is a foregone conclusion that the Golden State Warriors will be around next season. However, will they be the same team after going to five straight NBA Finals? Especially if they lose some key players in the offseason?
