Baltimore Orioles: What/Who is in Their Long Term Plan?
The Baltimore Orioles had the worst record in baseball last season. Because of it, they decided to start a full rebuild. Brandon Hyde is in his first season as manager and Mike Elias is in his first season as general manager.
At this time last season, Hyde was the bench coach for the Chicago Cubs and Elias was in the front office for the Houston Astros. Mike Elias helped Houston draft some key players like Jose Altuve, George Springer, Alex Bregman, and Carlos Correa.
Elias hopes to draft a core of his own here in Baltimore for the long future. He drafted catcher Adley Rutschman with the first overall pick in the MLB Draft. Rutschman will most likely progress through the minor leagues really quickly.
Some of the other players the Orioles drafted in the early rounds was infielder Gunnar Henderson 42nd overall from John T. Morgan Academy in Alabama (HS), outfielder Kyle Stowers 71st overall from Stanford University, outfielder Zach Watson 78th overall from LSU , infielder Joey Ortiz was selected 108th overall from New Mexico State University, and infielder Darrell Hernaiz was selected 138th overall from America (TX) high school.
They hope all of those players I mentioned sign with them and begin progressing through the minor league systems immediately.
At the moment, the Orioles don’t have a very deep farm system but their Single-A team the Delmarva Shorebirds are the best team in the South Atlantic League Northern with a 43-14 record. They are 5.5 games up on the Greensboro Grasshoppers and they are the Pittsburgh Pirates Single-A farm team.
With Baltimore having a very good farm team down there, it goes to show that they have the potential to be really good in 2022-2023.
The Baltimore Orioles are tied for the worst record in baseball this season with the Kansas City Royals at 19-41. Baltimore will most likely have the top pick or the second pick in next year’s draft. By drafting well, this is the way they need to rebuild the franchise.
Baltimore just made it to the playoffs in 2016. It is amazing how quickly teams have to rebuild because of situations like these. It is also obvious General Manager Mike Elias and the rest of this franchise have a plan in place to contend in the immediate future.
