NCAA: This is Why The Transfer Portal is So Popular
The transfer portal is college football is a hot topic. This gives a chance for a player to transfer to a team that he feels give him a better shot. If he is not starting and he transfers to another school, he might have a better shot. In the end its all about being seen more in hopes of making it to the NFL. The player could also help his new team have a winning season which might draw more recruits to that university. The transfer portal is good for both the player and the universities.
A big example of this is Jalen Hurts. Hurts was the quarterback at the University of Alabama. He led them to three national championship appearances. The Crimson Tide would win one of those losing the other two to Clemson. Head coach Nick Saban told Hurts he would be behind Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa led them to the one victory because Hurts was not good in that game.
He entered the portal and transferred to the University of Oklahoma. The last two years the Sooners have had a Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback. Those would be Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. Hurts could be the next one to win that trophy. The University of Oklahoma will also be replacing Murray who was the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The main reason is now Hurts will get to finish his college career as a starter.
This also helps the universities as well. They now get a chance to have players who know they can’t be a starter or want a change now can do it. During the recruitment process, it might be hard to get a certain position filled. Now if a player sees that a university has an open spot they can transfer and play. In the end, it has become very popular. This will be bog in the upcoming years.
