Movie: A Look Inside Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart

One of the most overlooked movies is out now, Booksmart. I don’t have to tell you that it’s a good movie. It lives up to its ninety-seven percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. So instead let’s look at the pieces that made it a good movie.

For starters, this is the directorial debut of Olivia Wilde (Her and Tron Legacy) so she has connections to get star power for the movie. Staring her husband Jason Sudeikis along with Lisa Kudrow and Will Forte. The banter between them and the teen cast are the best parts of the movie. With the majority of the cast being high school aged, I could see this movie being a “before they were famous” type movie like Freaks and Geeks and The Outsiders.

This movie could go down as the SuperBad of this generation. I am apart of the generation when that movie came out. Booksmart really hits it beat for beat the same as Superbad without it being a flat-out copy. There’s a line in the movie that I would say that separates it from being Superbad, “you’re at a 10 right now, I need you at a 2”. Every side character in the movie is over the top.

The jokes told by the teenagers are very adult driven so that adult-viewers can also enjoy the movie and relate. That’s my favorite part of the movie personally.

It’s a shame that more people will not see this movie. It went up against Aladdin opening weekend and the reviews are in favor of Booksmart. However, the marketing for this movie was bad as well. It is an indie movie, it didn’t make the rounds at film festivals to drum up press. Instead, it just released worldwide in theaters. In fact, had this movie been made by A24 studios, it would be getting more buzz.
