New England Patriots: Julian Edelman Re-signing an Important One
The New England Patriots made a big statement. They have brought back wide receiver Julian Edelman on a 2-year extension. He will be paid $18 million. $12 million of which is guaranteed. Edelman will also receive an $8 million signing bonus. He has been a major part of the Patriots offense. With Rob Gronkowski retiring he will be the main target. Edelman has also been a security blanket for Tom Brady.
Edelman earns this contract. He tore his ACL in 2017 and missed the season. Last year he missed four games after violating the NFL PED policy. Coming back in week 5 he was huge the rest of the season. In the 12 games, he played he had 74 receptions, 850 yards, and 6 touchdowns. One of the games he shined in was the Super Bowl where he had 10 catches for 141 yards. He was named the Super Bowl MVP and the Patriots won the game 13-3.
He came to the Patriots as a quarterback out of Kent State. Edelman transformed into a wide receiver and never looked back. He has a total 115 receptions and 1,412 yards in his postseason career. Edelman is only behind the Hall of Famer Jerry Rice. Rice is considered the best receiver of all time. Now, this pretty much guarantees Edelman will finish his career as a Patriot.
I will guarantee that Tom Brady is a happy man. Edelman will be the rock as far the wideouts go. The Patriots drafted N’Keal Harry in the first round so he is a rookie. They picked Demaryius Thomas but he is coming off Achilles injury. The last wideout in Josh Gordon who status in question. I believe the Patriots will be fine. In my opinion, this was a great move. Look for Edelman, despite his age, to be a big part of the New England Patriots offense the next two years.
