Shaq Lawson: Three Teams He Could Land With In 2020

In 2016 the Buffalo Bills were getting a stellar defensive end out of Clemson University. He had helped the Clemson Tigers almost beat the Alabama Crimson Tide in the National Championship that college football season. He was then projected to go in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft as a highly scouted prospect out of college. Shaq Lawson was then selected by the Bills and since his rookie season, he’s been plagued by injuries. His first few years in the NFL haven’t lived up to his potential with things holding him back, but a change of scenery could be what he needs. Lawson is in the final year of his contract with the Buffalo Bills and is in need of proving he deserves a second contract with a new team. Let’s take a look at three places he could land in 2020 as a free agent.

Miami Dolphins

Unless the Miami Dolphins sign a big-name player before the 2019 NFL season, they are very thin at the defensive end position. Shaq Lawson can prove himself worthy of a contract by Miami this year if he produces well on the field. The Miami Dolphins can get a good look at Shaq Lawson this season as the Buffalo Bills play them twice in 2019. Lawson would be an improvement at defensive end because the Dolphins current depth chart includes Charles Harris, Tank Carradine, Jonathan Woodard, Jonathan Ledbetter, and Dewayne Hendrix. I’ll give credit to Harris as he was decent and Ledbetter is a rookie out of Georgia as well as Hendrix is a rookie from Pittsburgh. Those three get a pass, but Carradine and Woodard have not been productive in the NFL. Shaq Lawson should catch some Miami Dolphins scouts eyes this season if he does well.

Los Angeles Chargers

Shaq Lawson could choose to pursue the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020 NFL Free Agency and help add to the depth at the defensive line position. The Chargers also have other former Clemson players in Mike Williams and Artavis Scott, but they are on the offensive side of the ball. Them being wide receivers and him being a defensive end they may not have that much of a connection. Mostly I believe Shaq Lawson would fit in well with the depth and would be good in rotation on the defensive line. The Los Angeles Chargers could be a landing spot in 2020.

Oakland Raiders

If the Oakland Raiders choose to sign Shaq Lawson in 2020 as a free agent, they will look like the professional Clemson Tigers. The Oakland Raiders currently have rookies Clelin Ferrell, Trayvon Mullen, and Hunter Renfrow which are all from Clemson. Adding Shaq Lawson would be interesting from that standpoint, also because General Manager Mike Mayock likes Clemson players, and Lawson would be more depth at the defensive end position. The Oakland Raiders have more than just Clelin Ferrell and Arden Key on the roster at defensive end, but those two are the only ones I think can be productive that are currently on the roster. Shaq Lawson would be productive with the Raiders in the defensive end rotation if added in 2020 NFL Free Agency.

Before any team signs Shaq Lawson to a new deal, his on the field production will have to increase. The Buffalo Bills will look for him to be productive for their benefit, but he needs to be statistically good to draw interest from another team. Whether the Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Chargers or Oakland Raiders sign Shaq Lawson or another team does, I think he will find another home in 2020. The 2019 NFL season is definitely a make or break year for Shaq Lawson and we will have to see what the future hold for him.
