Cleveland Browns: Is Baker Mayfield an MVP Candidate?
Coming off of a 7-8-1 season for the Cleveland Browns, quarterback Baker Mayfield hopes to continue to add to his resume and challenge for Most Valuable Player honors in year two. Mayfield won rookie of the week honors several times in 2018. He helped his team get wins down the stretch to build momentum for the upcoming season. I believe he is a candidate to win the league’s MVP the night before Super Bowl LIV in Miami.
Mayfield threw more touchdowns in a rookie season than the previous holder Peyton Manning in 1998. The team was not doing very well in Week 3 last year at home against the New York Jets. When Tyrod Taylor was forced to leave the game, Baker came in, and the mood was different. He led them to a come from behind victory. It was Cleveland’s first win since Christmas Eve of 2016. It galvanized a city desperate to see wins once again as they did in the 1950s, ’60s, and ’80s. The win on that Thursday night may have symbolized in a new era for the Browns.
What makes this team tick
Listening to a show called Cleveland Browns Daily, co-host Nathan Zegura talked about Mayfield, and he is the type of guy who has a chip on his shoulder. He plays well when people count him out. The organization is not satisfied with last year’s improvement. For this reason, along with adding pieces like Odell Beckham Jr. and Kareem Hunt to this offense, I believe the Browns are going to have a lot of success. The offensive line gave the former University of Oklahoma quarterback time to throw, especially as the season moved along. The defense got better with the addition of Sheldon Richardson, and Cleveland made sure to shore up the defense in the draft to help the team get the ball back for Mayfield.
Why I think he has a chance in the MVP discussion
After having a good rookie season, having the offseason to work on things he can improve on will help him grow. Quarterbacks tend to win the major individual awards frequently, be it college or pro. History bodes well for him if he produces at a high level consistently this fall and winter. What also may work to his benefit is Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady have recently won the award and perhaps the voters will be inclined to have a new face win the hardware. I believe that if he is healthy and plays well, there is no doubt that Baker Mayfield will be in the MVP discussion in the 2019 season.
