Columbus Blue Jackets: What’s up Next for the Surprise Team in the East?

The Columbus Blue Jackets may not have won the Stanley Cup. However, they made history during the 2019 postseason. Columbus swept the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first-round. That wasn’t history. The history was that the Blue Jackets swept the best team in the NHL in the postseason. That is the first time in the NHL postseason that has happened.

They had a 2-1 series lead against the Boston Bruins in the second round. Nevertheless, Columbus lost the series 4-2, Therefore, they will have a ton of decisions to make this offseason.

The Blue Jackets went all in at the trade deadline. Thus, they won’t have a draft pick until the seventh-round this season.

Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, forward Artemi Panarin, forward Matt Duchene, and forward Ryan Dzingel will be some of the free agents on this team and it is very possible none of them return.

If Bobrovsky doesn’t return, they might be alright at goaltender. Joonas Korpisalo is 25 years old and is indeed ready to be an NHL starter. With that being said, Sergei Bobrovsky is 30 years old and he is still one of the best goalies in the NHL.

I think teams like the Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils, Nashville Predators, New York Islanders, and New York Rangers will be interested in Panarin. He is one of the best goal scorers in the NHL.

Columbus needs to find a way to keep the band together. They got hot at the end of the year and made some noise in the playoffs. If Bobrovsky, Panarin, Duchene, and Dzingel all stay put here, it is very possible the Columbus Blue Jackets could be one of the favorites to win it all next year. Simply because they finally developed chemistry together.

Some of the other key players that return next season that are not Nick Foligno, Cam Atkinson, Pierre-Luc Dubois, and Seth Jones. Zachary Werenski is a restricted free agent and he will most likely stay put in Columbus.

Head Coach John Tortorella has a lot to look forward to in the future. Especially if he gets some of his key players back. If Jarmo Kekalainen doesn’t bring some of the free agents back, then Tortorella will have a different roster to work with.
