New York Mets: Team Needs a Strong May and June to Stay a Float in NL East

In the first 31 games of the MLB season for the New York Mets, they have been average at best. Even though they are 16-15, New York is only 1.5 games back of the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the NL East.

The truth of the matter is, the Mets can’t go on any massive losing streaks because it seems like only one NL East team will reach the postseason.

Hitting has been of their strengths so far in 2019. They don’t have the greatest lineup in the universe, but New York has enough to win games and series. Jeff McNeil has a .352 batting average, but he only has one home run and 12 RBI’s. His on-base percentage is .435.

Rookie Pete Alonso was the Rookie of the Month for April in the National League. He has a .291 batting average with nine home runs and 26 RBI’s. His on-base percentage is .383.

Robinson Cano was acquired in a trade during the offseason from the Seattle Mariners, He has a .271 batting average with three home runs and 11 RBI’s so far this season. His on-base percentage is .322.

Amed Rosario has been much better at shortstop for the New York Mets to start this season. He had a really slow start last season and New York fans have not complained much about him this season. Rosario has also improved defensively.

His batting average is .268 with two home runs and 17 RBI’s, along with three stolen bases. Amed Rosario’s on-base percentage is .311. He could be the leadoff hitter at some point this season.

Michael Conforto has a .264 batting average with six home runs and 14 RBI’s, along with two stolen bases. His on-base percentage is .397.

Wilson Ramos has been very good behind the plate for the Mets so far this season. He has a .247 batting average with one home run and 17 RBI’s. His on-base percentage is .311.

The Mets pitchers have hit four home runs this season, but their pitching hasn’t been great this season.

Jacob deGrom has a 2-3 record with a 3.82 ERA after winning the NL Cy Young Award a year ago. He had a couple of rough starts and deGrom almost had an issue with his elbow but thank goodness there was nothing wrong. He has pitched in 33 innings and gave up 29 hits and 14 runs. Jacob deGrom has walked 12 batters and struck out 49.

Steven Matz has been the best pitcher ever since a couple of his bad starts. His record is 3-1 with a 3.68 ERA. In 29.1 innings pitched, he has given up 24 hits and 16 runs. Matz has walked eight batters and struck out 29.

Noah Syndergaard has been a disappointment until he pitched a 1-0 complete game shutout against the Cincinnati Reds at home and Syndergaard struck out 11 in that game. His record is 2-3 with a 5.02 ERA. In 43 innings pitched, he has given up 44 hits and 26 runs. Noah Syndergaard has walked 11 batters and struck out 49.

Zack Wheeler‘s record is 2-2 with a 5.05 ERA. In 35.2 innings pitched, he has given up 33 hits and 20 runs. Wheeler has walked 17 batters and struck out 37.

The bullpen has been really shaky. The Mets will probably need to trade for someone at some point in order to bolster it. The only bright spot in the bullpen has been Edwin Diaz.

His record is 0-2 with a 2.13 ERA. In 12.2 innings pitched, Diaz has given up nine hits and three runs. Although he has only walked two batters while striking out 21. Edwin Diaz is 8-for-8 in saves.

After the Mets play the Milwaukee Brewers on the road this weekend for a three-game set, New York’s schedule will lighten up. However, they play 13 straight games against division opponents and at the end of May. After that, the New York Mets will face the Los Angeles Dodgers on the road for a four-game set.

They can’t play below average in this month and expect to stay close in the standings.
