Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Grading the 2019 NFL Draft
With the draft coming to close. It is time to go back and review how the draft went for certain teams. As always, all the teams have holes they try to fill with draft picks. Some teams made the right picks others left us wondering why. The New York Giants and Oakland Raiders were two of those that had us scratching our heads. Here is my draft review for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Round 1: Devin White LB LSU
According to many experts, he is an absolute game changer. At his position, I agree he was a playmaker at LSU. With the Buccaneers so thin at linebacker with only Lavonte David as a true linebacker. David will take him under his wing and teach him the game. White could be the face of the defense soon. This pick was a good one. I give it a grade of A.
Round 2: Sean Bunting CB Central Michigan
Bunting had a good college career at Central Michigan. He was well-known inside the MAC conference. Bunting poses good speed and is also athletic. He also likes to stick to the receiver he is covering. This will and is well liked by defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. I will give this pick a B.
Round 3: Jamel Dean CB Auburn
The take on Dean is that he has sustained injuries. This was back to back corners taken. Jason Licht needs secondary help but 2 picks in a row. If Dean can stay healthy then this pick will not be so bad. If he gets injured it will leave another hole for the Buccaneers in their secondary. I will give this pick a D.
Round 3: Mike Edwards DB Kentucky
There is a lot of buzz on Edwards. He is a great safety that played in a conference that many say is like the NFL. The SEC had many challenges for Edwards every Saturday. His best attribute is physicality. He is good in the box safety which will help. I give this pick a B.
Round 4: Anthony Nelson DE Iowa
Nelson might be the edge rusher the Bucs need. Nelson is very similar to Carl Nassib. The difference is the more athletic. Nelson is a 6’7 and 271 pounds very big for an edge rusher. With his size, he will be a problem for a most offensive lineman. I will give this pick a B.
Round 5: Matt Gay K Utah
This pick to me has no words. Licht must not be thinking about how he made the same mistake twice. Gay was shocked he got drafted. Now another issue with him is he suffers from depression. That is something that a kicker should not have. It will be hard if he goes into a slump. Hopefully, he can challenge Cairo Santos for the starter job, and he is able to overcome depression from the help of his teammates and doctors. I give this pick an F.
Round 6: Scott Miller WR Bowling Green
Miller is known for his speed. He is 5 foot 9 and weighs in at 174 pounds. Many experts say he might need to bulk up. Miller is a faster version of Adam Humphries. He will hopefully work out to be a good weapon for Jameis Winston. I give this pick a B.
Round 7: Terry Beckner Jr. DT Missouri
Beckner is another piece that can be added to the defensive line. He will be a project. Most say that he will be a backup or practice squad player. He might surprise us all and work out to be a skillful player. He will have to work hard to be a starter. This pick is C.
Overall the Bucs Draft grade is: B
