Is Joaquin Phoenix the Next Great Joker?

With the release of the first trailer for the upcoming Joker movie, it’s time to ask the big question. Will Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal as the Joker be the greatest of all Joker’s?

We’ve seen many portrayals of the Joker in movies and television for years. And it’s hard to compare and contrast the different performances of Batman’s archenemy.

However, it is also hard to tell if Joaquin Phoenix will make a great Joker. We’ve only seen just one trailer of Joker, so it’s not like we can’t cast any judgment now.

Joaquin Phoenix has some shoes to fill when it comes to being the Joker. As one of the greatest villains, some of the best actors have nailed the Joker’s psychotic ways to a tee.

First, let’s take a look at some of the best portrayals of the Joker.

Cesar Romero

Romero has to be one of the best as he was the first Joker we’ve seen on television. Debuting in the Batman television series in 1966, Romero was the first to introduce the maniacal laughter and revenge seeking Joker that we see today. Not only that, but Romero was also nearly 60 when taking the role of the Joker! Showing off the pizzazz of the maniacal villain, Romero set the standard for every Joker to come.

Jack Nicholson

Next on this list would be Jack Nicholson’s Joker in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman. Though it’s not like a villain to steal the show (and we’ll talk about that later). But Nicholson’s performance as the Joker was a show stopper. Taking a page from his role in The Shining, Nicholson brought the sarcastic lunacy to Batman to make the Joker the real villain that he is. It was almost vaudeville if you think about it.

Heath Ledger

And finally, probably the best Joker portrayal goes to Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight (2008). There is something about Ledger’s Joker that screams maniac. It’s method acting at its best. It’s as if Ledger was the Joker deep down. The laughter about the damage that he has caused, the sucking on the mouth scars, the insanity of a man bent on destruction. The Dark Knight’s Joker shows what the Joker should be. An all out villain who puts on a smile causing pain.

Now we wonder what Joaquin Phoenix can bring to the table. Will Phoenix bring a memorable performance? Or will his portrayal of the Joker flop. Joker will be in theaters on October 4th, 2019.
