New England Patriots Draft Talk: Top Three Positions of Need
Like the other 31 teams, it is draft time. The defending Super Bowl Champs have 12 picks. The Patriots just had one of their biggest stars retire. Rob Gronkowski announced it officially. The Patriots do not rebuild but they have a shot to reload with their picks. They have also brought in free agents that will help as well. Here are the three positions the Patriots need to fill in the 2019 draft.

Last year the Patriots brought in Josh Gordon. Gordon’s off the field demons caught up to him and he left the team before they won the Super Bowl. They do not have a number one wide receiver. One of the receivers that the Patriots should look at is A.J. Brown from Ole Miss. Brown was a great receiver for the Rebels. They could also look at Kelvin Harmon out of North Carolina State. He was great for the Wolfpack. Both gentlemen could help Tom Brady win another Super Bowl.
Now the Gronkowski is no longer a weapon, it’s time to find his replacement. They could trade for one, maybe Cameron Brate from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, they will probably draft his replacement. There are two that they are looking at. The first is Noah Fant from the University of Iowa. The Patriots may trade up to get him because he would fit well in Josh McDaniels offense. The other player is Irv Smith Jr. from the University of Alabama. Smith was great for Nick Saban and would be a nice replacement for Gronkowski.

The Patriots acquired Michael Bennet via free agency. They will need to get him some help with the departure of Trey Flowers. If they can get back to putting pressure on the quarterback, it will be a much easier season in 2019. They have two that they would love to bring in via the draft. First, is Chase Winovich from the University of Michigan. Winovich was hard to stop and helped Michigan to a good season. The other is Dexter Lawrence from Clemson University. He was a force in helping the Tigers to another National Championship. He would be a terrific addition to the Patriots defensive line.
I believe that the Patriots also need to draft Tom Brady’s replacement soon. Maybe the Patriots could trade with the Arizona Cardinals and acquire Josh Rosen. The Cardinals seem to be drafting Kyler Murray with the first overall pick. Rosen could be under Brady’s tutelage for the next few years and be a good quarterback. We will have to see what the Patriots will do. We all know how they will be going out and trying to break the NFL record by winning a 7th Super Bowl title.
