NHL: Top Five Candidates for the Norris Trophy

The next trophy up is the Norris Trophy. This is rewarded to the best defenseman in the NHL. Like the Vezina Trophy, many talented players have won it. Last year’s winner was Tampa Bay Lightning Victor Hedman. This season many players have shown that they deserve to win it. Here are my five candidates to win the Norris Trophy this year.

5. Roman Josi (Nashville Predators)

Josi is a big part of the defense for the Predators. He, of course, has P.K. Subban as a teammate. Josi has so far played in 74 games he has 55 points. He has 15 goals and 40 assists. Josi also a plus 9 rating. He is having a solid year.

4. John Carlson (Washington Capitals)

Carlson is on a team looking to defend their Stanley Cup. Carlson is one of the big four that plays on the Capitals power play. He has played in 73 games so far. He has 65 points. Carlson has 12 goals and 53 assists. He is a plus 20 which is highest in the NHL.

3. Brent Burns (San Jose Sharks)

Burns has been a solid defenseman for many years. He is part of a Sharks team that is heading to the postseason. Burns has played so far in 73 games. He is a plus 15. Burns has 75 points so far 13 goals and 62 assists. He will be high on the list that might win the trophy.

2. Morgan Rielly (Toronto Maple Leafs)

Rielly has been a solid piece for the Maple Leafs all season. He so far played 74 games. Rielly has 68 points. He has 20 goals and 48 assists. The biggest stat about him is he is a plus 27. Rielly has helped the Maple Leafs get into playoff contention. Rielly like Burns will be highly considered for the trophy.

1. Mark Giordano (Calgary Flames)

Giordano has been solid and helped the Flames have a good year. He has been listed as the favorite to win the Norris. The reasons are as follows. He so far has only played in 71 games. Giordano has 68 points. He has 14 goals and 54 assists. The important thing that stands out is he is a plus 31. Look for the season is he having to lead the Flames into a nice playoff run.

All five of these gentlemen deserve to win the trophy. All five of these teams are going to make the postseason. Let’s see who takes home the hardware.
