NFL Free Agency: What Each AFC West Team Needs
The 2018 NFL Season is now over. It is time to start focusing on the 2019 NFL Offseason. The new league year begins on March 13. That is when moves that teams make between now and then can become official. Moves such as the Denver Broncos acquiring Joe Flacco from the Baltimore Ravens. It is also when free agency can start. Teams can begin negotiations 48 hours prior, however. We here at IroniqMedia pledge every year to bring you top-notch coverage of free agency and the NFL Draft. We begin our free agency coverage with important signing or re-signings for each division. Here is the AFC West.
We already mentioned that the Broncos have shot the first salvo of the offseason. The completed a trade for Ravens QB Joe Flacco. Therefore, what does that do for the Broncos and free agency? Well, they need to have some big horses up front to protect that traded investment. Especially at right tackle. Re-signing Jared Veldheer may be the best option. However, the Broncos may want to get younger at the position. Thus, Bobby Hart from the Cincinnati Bengals comes to mind. He played in 99% of the team’s snaps in 2018 and is only 25 years old. With Mike Munchak taking over the o-line duties youth could prevail at the position.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs represented the AFC as ½ of the teams in the AFC Championship game. Therefore, you would not think that they would need much as far as free agency. That is far from the truth. Here is a team with many holes, especially on the defensive side of the ball. They are going to need help in the secondary. In saying that, I can see that Chiefs making a run at several free agent CBs to try to fill the void. One name that makes sense is Jason Verrett of the Los Angeles Chargers. Not Only do you deplete a division opponent, but you can also get him on the cheaper side. He is coming off a season-ending injury last year. Thus, he may be willing to sign for a smaller “prove it” type deal.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers also were a playoff team in 2018. Nonetheless, there are still some holes that they could fill in free agency. One of those is at middle linebacker. Current MLB, Denzel Perryman is a free agent. While re-signing him makes the most sense for team comradery. Although, the team may want to move on to something else. If they choose to do so, Brandon Marshall makes sense. He is the former signal caller for the Broncos defense. He is a solid MLB with tremendous run stuffing abilities.
This is the toughest team of them all to try to predict in free agency. They have three, yes, I said three, first round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft. They also have an estimated $70 million in salary cap space. They could sign any one person that they wanted to. In fact, I could see them making a play for Le’Veon Bell. Both Marshawn Lynch and Doug Martin are free agents. This could be a strong move with the Raiders being one-year removed from opening in Las Vegas.
These moves in free agency could help strengthen these AFC West teams. It could also bring this division to the forefront of the NFL in 2019.
