Nebraska Cornhuskers: Looking Ahead to 2019 and Possible Breakout Players

The Scott Frost era started out like a case of frostbite in 2018. Then after the 0-6 start to the season, the Nebraska Cornhuskers finished winning 4 of the last 6 games and ended the year 4-8. The future actually looks bright for Nebraska football with the way the schedule falls and the way some players emerged. If the Cornhuskers can take advantage of the opponents on the 2019 schedule and have these players breakout, this season could be stellar for Nebraska football. Let’s look ahead to the 2019 Nebraska football schedule and some possible breakout players for this season.

2019 Nebraska Football Schedule

South Alabama comes to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the Cornhuskers on August 31st in the season opener. Should be a routine warm-up game, but Nebraska football can’t take any game lightly. The Huskers should be 1-0 to start 2019.

On September 7th Nebraska travels to play Colorado in their house in week two. A tough test early, but the Cornhuskers can win with a lot of focus on the road. Nebraska football should be 2-0 after this game.

Another confidence builder game as Nebraska plays Northern Illinois in Lincoln, Nebraska on September 14th. The Cornhuskers should be 3-0 after that week three contest.

In week four Nebraska football travels to Illinois in an away game. A 4-0 start is possible with a win in this game on September 21st.

On the 28th of September Nebraska host Ohio State in Lincoln, Nebraska to start a two-game home stretch. Even with a bright 2019 outlook, the Cornhuskers don’t match up well against the Buckeyes. They should be 4-1 after this game.

October 5th the Cornhuskers host the Northwestern Wildcats with a chance to get a big home win. Nebraska football could be 5-1 if they get a big win in Lincoln in week 6.

Week 7 the Huskers travel to Minnesota in a tough road contest. Nebraska could win this game on October 12th and be 6-1.

Indiana comes to Nebraska in week 8 on October 26th. The Huskers shouldn’t have any trouble with the Hoosiers and could be 7-1.

The Cornhuskers go on the road to play Purdue before their bye week. Nebraska could come away with a solid road victory on November 2nd and be 8-1 heading into a rest week.

November 9th is Nebraska football’s bye week. Right after is another tough battle this one at home against Wisconsin.

On the 16th of November in Lincoln, Nebraska the Badgers should have the upper hand on the Huskers. Nebraska football could be 8-2 after the loss at home in week 11.

The Cornhuskers then go on the road to visit the Maryland Terrapins in the last away game of the year on November 23rd. Nebraska should win in week 12 and go into the final game 9-2.

The Iowa Hawkeyes come into Lincoln for the last game of the regular season on November 30th. A tough fight for one last win in the 2019 regular season and it could go either way. I think Nebraska football comes away with a close victory. As a result, they end the year 10-2. No Big-10 championship appearance, but a bowl birth possibly a big name bowl game.

Prediction: Outback Bowl or Citrus Bowl

Breakout Players For 2019

Maurice Washington

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have lots of talent and depth at the running back position. Indeed, the Huskers should put together a tremendous 2019 in the running game. Leading the way will be Maurice Washington veteran running-back. Last season, he carried the ball 77 times for 455 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged 5.9 yards per carry and proved to be effective gaining yards in a hurry. Heading into spring he should be the number one running back, however, the talent at the position could change that. Furthermore, Washington should be able to carry most the load over the younger running-backs and the spotlight will be on him. If he is effective in the rushing and passing game he could end up being one of the best backs in the Big-10.

Adrian Martinez

The obvious pick, but Martinez had a great year in 2018. In fact, he will need to be successful in order for Nebraska football to have the season they want. In 2018 he threw for 2,617 yards and 17 touchdowns. He showed as a freshman he could be impactful and looks to refocus this season. As long as he puts the work in this off-season Nebraska football should have a good year and the sky is the limit for him. 2019 is going to depend on him for success this season.

A lot of talent and a bunch of potential, Nebraska football could be very successful in 2019. The Cornhuskers have a favorable schedule and talent all around on the roster. This season looks bright in Lincoln, Nebraska and there might not be any more cases of frostbite in the future.
