Florida Gators: Looking Back on the 2018 Season
The Florida Gators had what some might call a season to remember. All during the offseason, everyone wrote them off as a threat in the SEC East. Especially with a new head coach in Dan Mullen. Mullen had been at Florida before and left to turn around the program at Mississippi State. He brought the system that worked at Mississippi State and knew it would work at Florida. The fans were thrilled that they had a decent coach coming in. At the end of the 2018 season, there were some upsets in both ways. Here is my 2018 season review for the Florida Gators.
Many predicted the Gators to win 8 or 9 games in 2018. They would win 10. Starting with of course with a cupcake win over Charleston Southern. Their next win would come two weeks after that beating Colorado State. The Gators would win four straight SEC games. The only semi-easy win was against the Tennessee Volunteers. The other three would be hard-fought against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, and Vanderbilt Commodores. The win against the LSU Tigers was a big shock. Once again it would take the Gators two weeks to get another win against the South Carolina Gamecocks which would be close. Their final two regular season games they would come out on top against Idaho Vandals and they’re in-state rivals the Florida State Seminoles.
They would then enter their bowl game as an underdog. Especially seeing that they haven’t played well against the Michigan Wolverines. The Gators would beat the Wolverines very easily and give Dan Mullen 10 wins in his first season.
The Gators first loss came in the conference against the Kentucky Wildcats. The Wildcats had a losing streak against the Gators. The Wildcats had chances in the past to end the streak, but this was the year it happened. They went into the Swamp and beat the Gators. The next loss would be to their oldest rival the Georgia Bulldogs. This was a team that many had the Gators picked to lose too. The Gators looked flat against the Bulldogs with turnovers and penalties. The final loss would come against the Missouri Tigers. Yet another SEC opponent. This loss in many eyes was not supposed to happen. The Gators will have to make sure they watch games like this in 2019.
Overall for Gators fans like me, it was a great first year. There were, of course, the surprise win coming against the LSU Tigers. The Tigers were supposed to be the team that defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Tide would shut them out. They would also end their losing streak to the Florida State Seminoles. The surprise losses would come against the Wildcats and Tigers. This ended their winning streak against the Wildcats. The Tigers loss is one that all teams would like to have back but let it slip away. Dan Mullen has the Florida Gators moving in the right direction and look for them to be a force in 2019.
