2019 National Championship Game: Clemson Throttles Alabama, 44-16

The nation looked on wide-eyed. The Alabama Crimson Tide got manhandled by the Clemson Tigers. Clemson won the 2019 National Championship Game 44-16. It is the Tigers second championship of the playoff era.

True freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence played like anything but. Lawrence dissected the Tide defense. He threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns. The future Pantene spokesmodel made throws in this game I have never seen a true freshman make.

For the Crimson Tide, sophomore QB Tua Tagovailoa threw for 295 yards and two scores. However, he threw two terrible interceptions, including one that was returned for a TD.

Clemson becomes the first team in the modern era to finish a season 15-0.

Let’s look at my biggest takeaways from the 2019 National Championship game.

Trevor Lawrence is a true freshman. Justyn Ross is a true freshman. Tee Higgins is a sophomore. Travis Etienne is a sophomore. The offense that just dismantled Alabama will be back in full force in 2019.

Tua Tagovailoa is a sophomore. All of his top receivers are sophomores. The record-setting Alabama offense isn’t going anywhere.

The two teams are now 2-2 against each other over the last four years. No one will be shocked if next year’s College Football Playoff features the rubber match between the two.

This notion would have seemed crazy even two days ago. However, this is exactly what happened last night. Clemson pushed all the right buttons. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables put on a clinic defensively.

Alabama OC Mike Locksley was outclassed in every possible way.

The decision to fake a field goal in the third quarter was the absolute worst. On fourth and six, with Clemson, in field goal safe, you run an ISO play with the third-string QB. And you run behind the kicker as the lead blocker. It was just completely asinine.

Over the next three seasons, I would venture to say over thirty players from this game will be drafted. Clemson will send 4-5 defensive linemen to the league this year. Alabama will likely have 5-6 players from its defense selected.

On offense, Alabama should have 5-6 players taken in 2019. Clemson will likely have 2-3.

It is a real possibility the next three #1 overall picks played in this game last night. Alabama defensive lineman Quinnen Williams could be the top player selected in 2019. Tua Tagovailoa in 2020 and Trevor Lawrence in 2021 are also the favorites for the top spot in their respective draft classes.
