College Football: Looking Ahead to the Next 13 Bowl Games

Last week I previewed the first ten games of the college football bowl season. Now I take a look at the next thirteen.

After mostly games involving the group of Five, we start to get into the meat of the Power 5 bowl schedule.

So, let’s look at these games.

Jared Birmingham Bowl (Birmingham, AL)

12/22/2018      Memphis vs. Wake Forest  11 am ESPN

Memphis will enter this game without its top playmaker, RB Darrell Henderson. He will focus on the upcoming NFL. Wake Forest can put up massive amounts of points or it can lay an egg. It really depends on who gets up early ready to play at historic Legion Field.

PREDICTION: Wake Forest 37, Memphis 31

Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl (Ft. Worth, TX)

12/22/2018      Army vs. Houston 2:30 pm ESPN

Houston is without starting QB D’Eriq King and top player, DL Ed Oliver. Army will control the clock with their triple-option attack. Ultimately, this will lead to a win

PREDICTION: Army 24, Houston 16

Dollar General Bowl (Mobile, AL)

12/22/2018 Buffalo vs. Troy 6 pm ESPN

Look for a full preview of this game later in the week.

SoFi Hawai’i Bowl (Honolulu, HI)

12/22/2018      Louisiana Tech vs. Hawaii 9:30 pm ESPN

Hawaii got off to a hot start early in the season led by QB Cole McDonald. Nick Rolovich leads the Rainbow Warriors into a virtual home game. Louisiana Tech is led by one of college football’s all-time best pass rushers, statistically speaking. Jaylon Ferguson is a couple of sacks shy of Terrell Suggs record. It is a good chance he gets it in a losing effort.

PREDICTION: Hawaii 29, Louisiana Tech 24

SERVPRO First Responder Bowl (Dallas, TX)

12/26/2018      Boston College vs. Boise State 12:30 pm ESPN

Based off of personnel alone, I feel Boise State should probably win this game. However, my gut tells me that Boston College will control the clock running the football. I also feel the BC secondary will force a couple of timely turnovers to get the W.

PREDICTION: Boston College 20, Boise State 17

Quick Lane Bowl (Detroit, MI)

12/26/2018      Minnesota vs. Georgia Tech 4:15 pm ESPN

The final game for head coach Paul Johnson. The Yellow Jackets will be extra pumped to get the win for their coach. This will also mark the final game for the triple-option for Tech. Minnesota is rumored to have between 8-9 players being suspended for this game. The good news for HC P.J. Fleck is that this one likely won’t last much more than three hours.

PREDICTION: Georgia Tech 38, Minnesota 12

Cheez-It Bowl (Phoenix, AZ)

12/26/2018      Cal vs. TCU 8 pm ESPN

Cal has had a fine turnaround under HC Justin Wilcox. Doing so with mostly smoke and mirrors at the quarterback position. After a grueling loss to Ohio State early in the season, it was mostly a disappointment for HC Gary Patterson and the Horned Frogs. I expect that sentiment will continue into the offseason

Walk-On’s Independence Bowl (Shreveport, LA)

12/27/2018      Temple vs. Duke 12:30 pm ESPN

Temple is in its new-normal position of coaching a bowl game without its head coach. Geoff Collins has left to take the reins at Georgia Tech. Junior (and potential 1st-round pick) QB Daniel Jones leads the Blue Devils into Shreveport. Under normal circumstances, I would pick against the coaching change. However, I like the Owls here.

PREDICTION: Temple 28, Duke 27

New Era Pinstripe Bowl (Bronx, NY)

12/27/2018      Miami-FL vs. Wisconsin 4:15 pm ESPN

It is going to be cold and probably nasty weather. Who is used to playing in that? A team from South Beach or a team Wisconsin? Give me the Badgers!

PREDICTION: Wisconsin 24, Miami-FL 9

Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl (Houston, TX)

12/27/2018      Baylor vs. Vanderbilt 8 pm ESPN

Matt Rhule has done a terrific job re-establishing Baylor after the disaster left by Art Briles. Vandy coach Derek Mason has an opportunity to finish above 500 for the first time. I like the playmakers the Commodores have on offense to be the difference. Especially TE Jared Pinkney.

PREDICTION: Vanderbilt 23, Baylor 17

Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl (Nashville, TN)

12/28/2018      Auburn vs. Purdue 12:30 pm ESPN

What a disappointing year on the plains for Auburn. They go from competing for a national title last year to Gus Malzahn having to fight for his job. Purdue had the nation’s attention after destroying Ohio State earlier this year. However, they only finished with a 6-6 record. In a game like this, I will tend to go with the more talented team. In this case, that is Auburn.

PREDICTION: Auburn 24, Purdue 13

Camping World Bowl (Orlando, FL)

12/28/2018      West Virginia vs. Syracuse 4:15 pm ESPN

West Virginia will not have QB Will Grier, OT Yodny Cajuste, and maybe WR David Sills. Syracuse can light up the scoreboard. I don’t know if the Mountaineers will keep up without their star power.

PREDICTION: Syracuse 38, West Virginia 24

Valero Alamo Bowl (San Antonio, TX)

12/28/2018      Iowa State vs. Washington State 8 pm ESPN

This bowl seems like a disappointment for the Cougars after a 10-2 season. And honestly, they should be in a New Year’s Six bowl game over 9-3 Florida. Iowa State and RS freshman QB Brock Purdy will give WAZZU fits but Gardner Minshew will overcome.

PREDICTION: Washington State 35, Iowa State 27

What do you think about these 13 college football bowl games?
