South Carolina Gamecocks: Three Takeaways From the Loss to Florida

The South Carolina Gamecocks fell to the Florida Gators 35-31. Jake Bentley threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns.

For Florida, Feleipe Franks accounted for 197 total yards and three touchdowns. Florida overcame a 17-point deficit in the second half.

The South Carolina Gamecocks are now 5-4 on the year. Carolina finishes 4-4 in the SEC. They will return home next Saturday to play the Chattanooga Mocs. The game will broadcast at 6:30 pm on the SEC Alternate Channel.

Jake Bentley orchestrated the best drive I have seen in his South Carolina Gamecocks career. Bentley was 7-7 on the opening drive for 64 yards. He finished the drive with a two-yard TD pass to Jacob August.

Everything went right for Bentley on the drive. His poise was incredible. He had the accuracy and he read his progressions brilliantly. If Jake Bentley was like this all the time, no one would ever complain.

The South Carolina Gamecocks run defense was not ideal. This was especially true on the edges. Injuries have killed the depth. Bryson Allen-Williams and Aaron Sterling were both out for this week. The secondary is completely decimated.

Florida backs Jordan Scarlett and Lamical Perine combined for 266 yards. I am willing to bet that most of those came from running outside of the tackles. Florida had 367 yards rushing as a team and 528 yards of total offense.

With a 17-point lead, offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon decided a more conservative approach was the way to go. After an 89-yard catch and run by Deebo Samuel, it was all running all the time.

The Gamecocks were able to attack Florida with tremendous success on the perimeter passing. McClendon (probably with Muschamp in his ear) decided runs up the middle were the way to go. This is literally right into the strength of the Gators defense.

The results of those drives: 29 yards, two punts, and an interception. It was chicken s*%t playcalling at its finest.
