Los Angeles Rams: Can LA Add Pass Rush at the Deadline?
The NFL trade deadline is tomorrow, and a few teams have already made moves. I expect at least two more trades tomorrow. The Los Angeles Rams went all-in this offseason. They traded a first-round pick for WR Brandin Cooks. LA also signed free-agent DT Ndamukong Suh. These moves, the continued maturation of quarterback Jared Goff, and the savviness of head coach Sean McVay are all part of the early 2018 success.
However, outside of Defensive MVP frontrunner Aaron Donald, the Rams pass rush has been non-existent. Donald has ten sacks already this year. Suh has three sacks. The best pass rusher off of the edge has been Samson Ebukam. He has two sacks. If the Rams are going to make a deadline trade, and edge rusher is where they should look.
The Los Angeles Rams have most of their draft picks for the 2019 NFL Draft. The only pick they are missing is their second-round pick. They gave that up in the Marcus Peters trade. So draft pick compensation isn’t an issue. However, the salary cap is an issue for any large contracts.
WHO CAN THE LOS ANGELES RAMS TARGET?
If I am the Rams, I would pick up the phone to Jacksonville. Injuries and Blake Bortles ineptitude have curbed the optimism for the Jags 2018 season. Dante Fowler is a player that could add a presence off the edge for LA.
Jacksonville didn’t pick up his fifth-year option, so Fowler is a free agent after the year. He has two sacks in 2018 and is coming off an eight-sack season in 2017. Fowler would only be due around $2-million in prorated salary for 2018. Fowler is a high upside player and can give the Rams pass rush a shot in the arm.
I would not think compensation would be extraordinary. At best a third-round pick could be offered. I think a conditional fifth would get the deal done.
Do you think the Los Angeles Rams will add anyone at the trade deadline?
