Oakland Raiders: Could Jon Gruden Trade Derek Carr at the Deadline?
The 2018 NFL Trade Deadline is 2 weeks away. While many teams will not make a move, some will. 2017 saw one of the most active trade deadlines in recent history. One team that may be busy over the next two weeks could be the Oakland Raiders. There are reports that the Raiders want to move star WR, Amari Cooper. That could happen. However, what if Jon Gruden really wanted to blow this franchise up? He could do that by fielding offers for QB, Derek Carr.
Gruden has already done damage to the organization. He traded his start pass rusher Khalil Mack to the Chicago Bears for a good haul. In return for Mack, the Raiders received a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, a third-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and a sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The Raiders also sent a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to Chicago with Mack. Along with a conditional fifth-round pick in 2020.
Therefore, why not trade Derek Carr? Imagine the haul he could get for the star QB. A team like the Jacksonville Jaguars, who may want to think twice about Blake Bortles, could jump in the talks. Maybe even a team such as the Dallas Cowboys. They need something better than Dak Prescott.
The Jaguars make an interesting case. Bortles had an excellent 2017 campaign. Nonetheless, his 2017 campaign has not carried over into 2018. The loss of RB, Leonard Fournette is really affecting this offense. Bortles cannot carry it alone. However, maybe a more talented QB such as Carr could keep them afloat with a stalled running game.
The haul that Gruden could get could match or exceed that of what he received for Khalil Mack. In fact, this would set up the Raiders with multiple first-round picks over the next several seasons. Thus allowing Jon Gruden to build the roster in a way that he envisions.
While the Oakland Raiders trading Derek Carr is probably not going to happen, it is not a long-shot. Although, any serious football fan knows how Gruden feels about young QBs. Hence, making it a real possibility that the Oakland Raiders move on from the franchise QB.
