College Football: Who is on Upset Alert in Week Seven?

Every week going forward in the college football season, I will provide three teams that should be on Upset Alert going into their game.

Last week, my upsets were 1-2 against the spread, 1-2 straight up. I successfully predicted a UAB outright win over Louisiana Tech. However, I missed on Minnesota/Iowa and Old Dominion/FAU.

So who is on high alert this week? Let’s find out!

Ucla @ CAL (-6.5)

I can’t imagine that this is the start that Chip Kelly imagined for the Bruins. UCLA sits at 0-5 entering the week. However, it is not all doom and gloom. Freshman QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson has played better each week. The Bruins have withstood a difficult schedule and are getting closer to breaking through. Last week against Washington, UCLA was within a TD.

Cal has played great on defense. This is to be expected with a Justin Wilcox coached team. However, offensively, they are a mess. The Golden Bears are unsettled at quarterback. Brandon McIlwain, Chase Garbers, and Ross Bowers have each started a game.

I think this is the week Chip Kelly gets his first win with the Bruins. UCLA wins outright.

ARMY (-15) @ San Jose State

Despite being 0-5, the Spartans have not played bad. San Jose State played Oregon within two scores. If their kicking game was average, they could have beaten Hawaii. Last week, against Colorado State, SJSU trailed 28-0 before storming back to take the lead. The Spartans ultimately fell to the Rams, but the comeback was impressive. Senior TE Josh Oliver is a threat down the seam.

Army is going to grind clock and chew up yards. It is what they do. After nearly knocking off Oklahoma, they handed Buffalo their only loss. Army is averaging 308 yards per game on the ground with almost five per carry. That is tough to stop for anyone.

I don’t think San Jose State wins the game, but I think they can keep it under two scores. Army for the win, Spartans to cover.

Southern Miss @ NORTH TEXAS (-8.5)

Don’t look now but Southern Miss has one of the best defenses in the nation. Especially when it comes to getting off of the field. Per the Athletic ($), USM gets off the field by punt, turnover, or turnover on downs on 81.5% of their opponent’s drives. They are also only giving up 1.24 points-per-drive.

North Texas has struggled the last couple of weeks. Missing RB Loren Easly does not help matters. I don’t know if the Golden Eagles win this week, but I think they cover the 8.5.

Who do you think should be on Upset Alert this week? Let us know in the comments!
