South Florida Bulls: Takeaways From the Win Over UMass

The South Florida Bulls traveled in week 5 to Massachusetts to play the UMass Minutemen. Earlier in the week coach Charlie Strong said that the Bulls needed to get off to a fast start. The reason he said that is because the Bulls, in the previous weeks, had to come from behind. The only week in which they didn’t was week 1 against the Elon Phoenix. This was one of the weirdest first halves of football. Both the Bulls and Minutemen had many things go for them and against them.

The South Florida Bulls, on their first drive, scored on two plays. They finished with a 72-yard touchdown pass to Tyre McCants. This is what the Bulls wanted, an early lead. The Minutemen would drive down on their opening drive and have an answer. Here is where the first half got weird. On the next Bulls possession, there would be a forced fumble, and the Minutemen got a turnover. They would do nothing with it. The Bulls would put together a solid drive and would get a field goal, taking a 10-7 lead. That is how the first quarter would end.

The South Florida Bulls would get the ball to start the 2nd quarter and would throw an interception. It would be returned for a score and UMass would have the lead, 14-10. On the next kickoff, USF would have a targeting penalty and would lose a player for the rest of the game. Both teams traded drives back and forth the Minuteman would turn the ball over. The Bulls would turn the turnover into a touchdown and take a 20-14 lead, and that is how the first half would end.

UMass would get the kickoff after deferring in the first half and go 3 and out. It would just take the Bulls two plays as Jordan Cronkrite would have a 77-yard run. That would give them a 27-14 lead. The South Florida Bulls, on their next drive, would have another 30-yard run by Cronkrite. He would score a touchdown, and it would be 34-14. The Bulls would force the Minutemen to punt, and Jake Stone would return the ball 60-yards for a touchdown. This put the Bulls up 41-14.

UMass would score a touchdown on their next drive and now trail 41-21. Jordan Cronkrite would have another huge run, this one 76-yards, putting the Bulls up 48-21. UMass kept close they would answer on their next drive scoring a touchdown, and now the score was 48-28. The Bulls would add a field goal, to take a 51-21 lead. They would exchange drives, and the game would end 58-42.

This was a weird game right from the start. Coach Strong wanted a fast start he got that. The only issue is that the mistakes would be there. The turnovers and penalties would be a problem. Both teams had this issue, and the South Florida Bulls would overcome it. The best part of the day was Jordan Cronkrite. The young man that transferred from the University of Florida would set an AAC record with 305 yards rushing. The Bulls are now 5-0 on the season. They have a short week as they play Tulsa on Friday the 12th.
