South Florida Bulls: Looking Ahead to the UMass Minutemen

The South Florida Bulls are coming off their bye week and will travel to the state of Massachusetts to play the UMass Minutemen. This will be the first time the Bulls will play football in the state of Massachusetts. The Bulls are 4-0 and have three straight come from behind wins. The last game they played was a 20-13 win over the ECU Pirates. The Minutemen are coming off a loss against the Ohio Bobcats 58-42. The Bulls will have to remember not to look over the Minutemen.

Earlier this week, head coach Charlie Strong said they need to get off to a fast start. Now, the South Florida Bulls have had three straight come from behind wins, but they have been some scary times. Coach Strong wants to put points on the board early so that he doesn’t have to depend on another comeback. He thinks where the Bulls have lacked on first down. USF has put themselves in too many long second and third down situations. If the South Florida Bulls want to get better moving forward, they will have to do better on 1st down. They will have their tight end, Mitchell Wilcox, back. He is a big part of the USF offense.

UMass comes into this week with off the field distractions. Their head coach Mark Whipple has been suspended. He got into an altercation with an official during the Ohio game. He used the word rape after the referee made a call. The UMass administration said that was wrong and he got a one-game suspension. The Minutemen are 2-4. They also have a significant problem on defense. Last week against the Bobcats, Ohio’s offense scored on nine straight possessions and set a team record with 664 yards.

This will take place in McGuirk Alumni Stadium which only seats 17,000 people. This will be one of the smallest stadiums that the South Florida Bulls have ever played in. The Minutemen have not had a bye week, yet. They have played six straight games. Look for the Minutemen, at home, to try and use the home crowd no matter how small it is. The Bulls will continue to build off their 4-0 start. Hopefully, this game will not be a blowout.
