Los Angeles Rams: Jared Goff Reaches Franchise QB Status
In 2016, the Los Angeles Rams made a move up the draft board so that they could select their QB of the future. At the time, the question was Jared Goff or Carson Wentz. The Rams decided to go with Jared Goff. When the Rams made the decision, many thought it was the wrong one. However, his growth over the last two seasons has proved them wrong. Thus, we can now put the title of franchise QB onto Jared Goff.
The 2016 version was quite shaky. In the seven games that he started that season, it looked as though the Los Angeles Rams made the wrong decision. He compiled a record of 0-7. Goff only completed 112 of his 205 pass attempts. Racking up 1,089 yards, 5 TDs, and 7 INTs. Thus, finishing the 2016 season with a QB Rating of 63.6. While it was not a large sample, it was looking like a bad one.
However, the 2017 version of Jared Goff and the Los Angeles Rams was completely different. Gone was a big problem in Jeff Fisher. In steps the youngest head coach in NFL history, Sean McVay. The Rams specifically brought McVay in to make Jared Goff the franchise QB the Rams drafted him to be. The first year was a solid success.
The Rams would go 11-5 and claim the NFC West title. This was their first since 2003. They would make a return playoff appearance. That would be their first since 2004. It was in part due to McVay. Although a lot would be because of the play of Jared Goff. He would begin taking the steps of becoming the Rams franchise QB. Goff would finish the 2017 season with an 11-4 record. He did not play in the final game of the regular season. The young QB would complete 62% of his passes (296/477), for 3,804 yards 28 TDs and 7 INTs. His QB rating on the season was 100.5.
Now we are in 2018. Goff and the Los Angeles Rams are currently 4-0 after the first quarter of the season. They look like the best team in football. Especially after their 38-31 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. A game in which Goff had a perfect QB rating of 158.3. He had 5 TDs and no INTs on the night.
Jared Goff has finally risen to the top. He is not showing the Los Angeles but the NFL World that he is a franchise QB. Sometimes it just takes the right people to bring it out. The Rams are no longer the laughing-stock of the NFL and Jared Goff is now franchise QB he was selected to be in 2016.
