Ryder Cup: Looking Ahead to the 2018 Event

The 42nd Ryder Cup will begin in a matter of hours. It will be in Guyancourt, France, a southwest suburb of Paris. This will only be the second time the Ryder Cup will be held in continental Europe. It was held in Spain in 1997. The United States currently has the Cup after winning it two years ago. Which means the Europe team will try and win the Cup back on their soil. The United States has not played well on European soil.

There are 12 members per team. The format for the Ryder Cup is four-ball, foursomes, and singles.

Four-ball is where every player plays his own ball and the lowest score is counted for the team most holes win the match.

Foursomes are where the player’s alternate shots so one hits the tee ball the other player hits the next shot. They alternate shots until the ball is holed.

The final format is singles this is where the players play one on one with each other. The most points won in all the matches wins the Ryder Cup.

Each team has a captain and co-captains. The captains make picks to fill the remaining spots.

Thomas Bjorn captains Team Europe. His co-captains are Luke Donald, Robert Karlsson, Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell, and Lee Westwood. The players are Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Rory McIlroy, Francesca Molinari, Alex Noren, Thorbjorn Olesen, John Rahm, Justin Rose, Paul Casey, and Sergio Garcia. Ian Poulter and Henrik Stenson are captains’ picks.

Jim Furyk is the captain for Team USA. His co-captains are David Duval, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Davis Love III, and Steve Stricker. The team members are Bryson Dechambeau, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed, Webb Simpson, Jordan Speith, Justin Thomas, and Bubba Watson Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods were both captains picks. A fun fact: Phil Mickelson has made the team most of his career on tour. Tiger is finally a player. He has been a co-captain over several past events.

What to watch for at the Ryder Cup?

Can the US win on foreign soil? This US team is very strong, and the European team will have to play their best to win the cup back. As a golf fan, this is the most stressful tournament to watch all year. It always falls around my birthday. It is great if the US wins. I am hoping for a competitive Ryder Cup. Let’s hope the US can retain the cup.
