San Francisco 49ers: Should They Inquire About Tyrod Taylor?

San Francisco 49ers fans are hoping that the news of Jimmy Garoppolo tearing his ACL was just a dream. While it is not official, the news seems to be just on hold. At the time of this writing, we were waiting for the word from the MRI. Meanwhile, not all hope of a successful season may be lost.

In the same sense that the 49ers have lost Jimmy G, the Cleveland Browns are making a move at QB. After placing Tyrod Taylor into concussion protocol on Thursdays night, 2018 number one overall pick, Baker Mayfield led the Browns to their first win in almost two years. In doing so, the Browns named him the starting QB going forward.

So, what does this mean for Tyrod Taylor? He has now lost his starting job on two teams to younger QBs. Has one of the better, young QBs in the NFL become a rental QB? It is not a bad thing if you can prove to be a winner for that short stay. Therefore, why not have the San Francisco 49ers inquire about the possibilities of acquiring Taylor.

Taylor is in the final year of his contract. He is making $16 million this season. While that may be a big hit for the Browns, they can afford it. Currently, the Cleveland Browns are $55 million under the salary cap and that includes Taylor’s contract.

The San Francisco 49ers are $33 million under the cap. Therefore, taking the final prorated year of the Tyrod Taylor contract would not be a big issue. The bigger question would be whether or not the 49ers would want to rent the QB for the season.

It may not be a bad idea. Taylor is one of the better young QBs that could be available. He would also give the Niners a veteran leader in the clubhouse. Lastly, Taylor is a smart, mobile QB who would be ideal for Kyle Shanahan’s system. Thus, making a move for Tyrod Taylor may not be all that bad.

The Cleveland Browns may not want to trade Taylor when it is all said and done. However, if the San Francisco 49ers inquire with a sweet offer (maybe a 3rd and a 5th), they may not be able to resist. It could end up being something that is in the best interest of both teams.
