Urban Meyer: Was Texas coach Tom Herman the one to Snitch?
The Urban Meyer situation at Ohio State took another bizarre turn today. Jeff Snook, via his Facebook page, is reporting that Texas head coach Tom Herman is the one who tipped off Brett McMurphy. McMurphy broke a story a few weeks ago that now-former Buckeyes WR coach Zach Smith allegedly abused his ex-wife Courtney. After the McMurphy story broke, Meyer fired Zach Smith. As the story got bigger, Ohio State placed Urban Meyer on administrative leave, pending investigation. Ryan Day has been named the interim coach. The timeline for a decision is said to be two weeks.
Tom Herman served as offensive coordinator and QB coach under Urban Meyer from 2012-2014. He was the OC for their run to the National Championship in 2014. After that, Herman left to take the head coaching job at the University of Houston. Two years later, he was hired to replace Charlie Strong as the head coach at Texas.
Per the Snook report: “Herman was furious after five-star receiver Garrett Wilson committed to Ohio State in April over Texas, sources say. Wilson played at Austin (Texas) Lake Travis High.” He would then go on to initiate the contact with Brett McMurphy. Snook also alleges that Tom Herman is paying for Courtney Smith’s legal fees.
SO WHAT HAPPENS NEXT WITH URBAN MEYER?
Even when Ohio State reaches its conclusion, I don’t think we will have heard the end of this story. This is one of the most convoluted and tangled webs I have seen weaved in quite some time. Zach Smith is in all likelihood, never going to coach again. If the charges are true, he should be in jail, much less coaching. Rendering a guess, Urban Meyer will be suspended for the first four games. If he followed the chain of command like he says he did, athletic director Gene Smith could be culpable in all of this as well.
Tom Herman will likely deny all of this. He really has no reason to do otherwise. Brett McMurphy denies that Herman was his source.
For those who have asked for my response to Jeff Snook’s claim Saturday: “I have never revealed my sources in my nearly four decade journalistic career & I am not going to start now. However, I will say unequivocally that Tom Herman was not my source.”

Meanwhile, two major college football programs have black clouds hanging over their respective programs. I do not see them dissipating anytime soon.
