Washington Redskins: Don’t believe those that say Alex Smith was Wrong Choice
The Washington Redskins warranted a change at QB. Kirk Cousins did not want to be in the Nation’s Capital. If he did, he would have signed an extension years ago. Whether him not wanting to be here is management’s fault or not, is over. There is a new kid in town and he is getting absolutely no love in the media. Alex Smith is a fine QB and should have the Redskins playing for a NFC East Championship in 2018. We take a look at why.
The previous QB for the Washington Redskins while good, had his flaws. He did not like to throw deep unless it was guaranteed. He would never give his receivers a chance at 50/50 balls. Cousins also had issues beating the significant competition. During his three years as the full-time starter for the Redskins, Cousins had a 4-19 record against teams above .500. Meanwhile, he was 19-9-1 against teams below .500. Finally, if the team was at .500 Cousins was 3-2. Thus ending his career with the Redskins 26-30-1. He was also 0-1 in the playoffs.
Not a really great statistic for a guy who wanted the big money contract. Now he is the headache of the Minnesota Vikings. What will he do for them I the next three years remains to be seen. However, I would expect it to be more of the same.
Now we look at the new kid in town Alex Smith. In fact, Smith is coming off one of his best seasons in the NFL. He finished with the best passer rating in the NFL in 2017, 104.7. He only threw 5 INTs against 26 TDs. His career record is 88-62-1. A winning percentage of .582. He also is not afraid of taking shots downfield. Smith averaged approximately 270 YPG.
Yes, Smith has had a longer showcase. Nonetheless, he is still getting no love. He is one of the biggest reasons why the Washington Redskins will be a contender in 2018. This is probably one of the best rosters that the Redskins have seen in quite some time. Thus, now with a veteran QB is who smart, aggressive, and a winner gives this team their best chance at winning a playoff game in years.
